Hello everyone,

I am new to the forum, and I want to start by saying that the Emerson Custom Gallery is awesome. I am a relatively new Emerson nut, I currently own an EKI CQC-7 (Clip point) and a raven (clip point), and I am currently considering either a Mach 1 or a commander. Which brings me to my questions. I know that both are supposedly available with a satin finish and a plain edge, but does anyone know where I can get one? I know I can probably get one straight from EKI, but to be honest, I can't really afford it straight from them , even though I think they are wth it. I ususally try to save some money with a mail order or internet company. Also, does anyone have any opinions on the Mach 1, good or bad. Like I said I am trying to decide between the Mach 1 and Commander, so if anyone can help make this difficult decision a little easier, I am all ears.

Knife Boy- Welcome to the forums. I remember seeing an ad for satin plain edge Commanders by one of the stores who advertise in the dealers section. It was about a month or two ago, do a search and you'll find the information and then get in touch with them. Another way is to put an ad in the wanted section, write down what you're looking for (satin plain edge...for example) and then post it. If any dealers have them they will probably get in touch with you.
As far as deciding between Mach 1 and Commander, Commander hands down. Once you get used to the wave feature every other knife will go in the garbage.

I have to agree with the above. If you are going to get one, buy the Commander first. They rule! I have roughly 20 knives, including autos that now sit in my knife box and go unused since I got my Commander. The only other knife I have purchased and kept, other than a SAK, is a green G10 Commander.

The Mach-1 is a very good knife with a nice blade and handle design. I have one, it stays in my Spyderpac. The Commander is a great knife, I carry one almost all the time. I have three Commanders and will probably buy another when I can afford it. I would like to have bought that green g-10 model.

Yes, the Commander is a cool tool. Its a great blade profile with a really great opening mechanism. At some point in time you must buy a Commander. It's that unique to the folding knife market.
However, bear in mind that this knife has some rather unique design features that narrow the focus of its scope of uses.
Chances are the knife one carries will be used for a variety of cutting tasks other than "the big one".
1. The wide, deep reverse curve blade profile of the Commander is good but there are a few drawbacks.
2. Consider how this knife is meant to be carried. This is not a clip anywhere knife. When carried properly, the Wave permits the immediate engaging of the blade. When carried in other ways which may be practical for un-Waved knives the Wave may become a hinderance.
3. Serrations? In some cases they facilitate the cutting process. But most well made knives are very sharp and cut well without them. I often find myself working around the serrations for a lot of utility cutting.
