Machax Ill Performance?

A few weeks ago I bought my cousin a KABAR Kukri and myself the BK4. I was incredibly excited to get it out and try it, but after many outings and to my embarrassment and utter disappointment, it could not keep up with my cousin's $40.00 kukri. Yes, I know about the snap cuts and the saber grind, but it just doesn't bite into the wood near as well no matter what I try and even got stuck while batoning! There were many times while cutting firewood I secretly wished I wasn't so stubborn and ask to use his kukri instead. I love the design of the knife, but am disappointed in how it stands up to more affordable options. Has anyone else had similar findings? Would a relief edge help?

A kukri is an axe in a knife body. There simply isn't a knife that can outchop it. (cleavers don't count.)

Your bk4 is probably more versatile than his kukri, I'll bet.

I'm a little disappointed in my Machax as well, certainly my CS Gurkha kukri easily out performs it. Of course the Machax is considerably smaller than the kukri which is a disappointment in itself. You'd think a knife with a name that's a combination of machete and axe would be larger and more capable.

I'm glad to see it's not just me! I wish they made a version that was about three inches longer seeing as the "sweet spot" is only really about an inch and half. It makes my heart sad to say, cause I love Becker's, but I wouldn't recommend this to someone who is actually looking for a chopping tool, or even a decent knife for that matter. The price point is too high for the performance it gives back. The main reason I still have a soft spot for it is because of its unique design, and it does get the job at the end of the day.

HOWEVER, when I inspected my cousin's blade, I notice there were already tiny dings in it.

i agree with fortytwoblades and grease on this one. however i love mine. if you wanted a chopper you should have gotten the bk9

While we are on the subject, am I the only one NOT crazy about the slippery bar of soap that comes a handle on Becker's? I enjoy customizing them, but an affordable G-10 option would be nice for those who don't.

I have to agree. I bought a BK4 and was sorely dissapointed with it's chopping performance. Nice knife but not for me, I sold it sortly after I got it.
