Machax questions...

I will be looking for a bigger knife soon, and I want a knife that can chop very well and baton/split exceptionally. Originally I thought the machax would be perfect for my needs, but I have been looking at some other knives recently and I feel some of them may fit the bill a bit better. I have been looking at the ESEE Junglas, Cold Steel Gurkha Kukri SK-5, and the Buck Hoodlum. Would any of you be able to provide comparison pictures and data? I would think that the CS Kukri would out chop and out split the machax, but it is much more money. Have any of you compared the two? I would be interested to see how they preform against each other. Are there any other big blades that I should look at? BTW I am willing to spend up to about $160.

Thanks,

What about the other large Ka-Bars? Khukri, cutlass, BK-9 etc. Judging by your name I'm guessing you like orange? Orange G-10 one of those guys up.

I don't own the other knives you mentioned, but if I'm not mistaken the machax is much smaller than they are. I was actually surprised at how small the Machax is, and it's ultimately a good thing as far as I'm concerned. It's easy to carry on the belt, and I have yet to come across a task in the woods that is too big for the Machax.

My BK-9 batons better than the Machax does, but not by much. I love the Machax, it's the perfect woodsman's knife imho.

machax all the way. it is smaller than I expected but it performs like a much larger knife. it cuts through green scrub wood (vine maple, and hazelnut) like crazy, plus its its light and handy enough for fine work. it would replace my tomahawk if i coud throw it as well

Orangish, my man, keep an eye out. I've been playing with my machax and have discovered it is THE absolute, without a shadow of a doubt, survival woods knife. I've been putting together a "why the machax is more than a chopper" video. Keep your eyes peeled and prepare your mind for blownage. Other knives may out chop, but I bet you can't skin a squirrel with em. Oh I've said too much.....

I can speak from experience on this one, I've had them all. The CS Kukri will outchop the lot of them for sure. However, I don't feel like it is much more then a chopper and at $170ish its alot for just a chopper when a $20 hatchet will do about the same. The Machax would be the next best chopper even though it is alot smaller then you might think. At $80 it definitely the deal of the bunch. The ESEE Junglas is a very solid chopper but once again, for $175 thats a little much. The Buck Hoodlum is a nice knife. I personally don't care for the handle ergonomics and it isn't near the chopper of the others. Very nice knife though. Have you considered a BK9 at all? I would also weigh exactly how much wood processing you will be doing with your knife. If its wood processing only, the CS Kukri is tough to beat. Anything more then that, the Machax or BK9 is by far the best bang for the buck.

Awesome, clich. I agree about the Machax being THE woods knife, and I look forward to your video....

You have my attention. I can't wait to see this.

I had to literally pound the living snot out of it to get it through this super hard twisted piece of black walnut. I even had to hit the top of handle a few times, because the blade was not quite long enough when near the bottom. I have done this with ALL my Beckers. If it don't work, i don't use it.

buy the zombie chop stick if you're just going to baton

otherwise, but the Machax and try it for a few months. we can talk all day about how great it is, but until you try it, it's just words and pictures.

it's not the oldest Becker knife for nothing

get the cs kukri, the $20 version - it'll outchop all the knives you've listed.

I will be looking forwards to your video, maybe that will help me decide once I see the beast in action!

I have not actually considered the BK9, maybe I should look into it...

I'm going to try and finish it up this weekend if I can finish my finals essays and if the rain subsides.

I know the 4 is the UberWunderKid right now....but let's not forget the 9 was pluggin along doing all our big-knife work just fine before the 4 re-released! It all depends on what you want in a blade, and what you like. I personally prefer the looks of the 9 to the kukri-style blades. And from what I hear, the 4 is a lil harder to sharpen because of the recurve but I dunno for myself.

besides, I don't make sheaths for a 4! LMAO

all joking aside, I haven't had my 9 fail me in a task yet, it is barely outchopped by my massive thai e-nep.....and it is half the size of that ugly monster!

Heck, if u like the kukri blade, the Araynic E-nep aint a bad deal for 50 bucks! I like mine well enuff, just a lil big to carry long-distance maybe.
