Good afternoon

My BK4 is here and I'm already planning on which knife to piggyback. I lie as I've been thinking about this for a while now. I know the sheath is designed to fit the BK13 but I've read mixed reviews on it. I would like to use the piggyback knife for skinning Sm/Lg game and for smaller bushcraft tasks. I really like the looks of the bk24 and was curious if anyone has modified the shock sheath to accommodate it?

My current ideas are:
- Go with the 13 and see if that knife will work for my intended purposes
- Modify the 13 scabbard to accommodate the 24 (but then I think I'd find it's sheath too empty)
- Remove the 13 scabbard (hopefully someone has done this and can guide me through the process) and attach the 24 elsewhere to the 4

I'm leaning towards removing the 13 scabbard so I can use its pocket for something else and getting the 24.

Thanks and if anyone has any other ideas let me know. As always pics are highly appreciated.

Just get a 13 and put it in there. They are 1095cv now and really handy. Also get a 24 but no reason to attach it. Carry it however you please. I have 5-14/24 and a couple of 11s. They're wonderful tools and you won't regret having one.

The pocket will hold a multi-tool nicely. The thing is, you'll get tired of the Velcro because you'll find urself using the 24 so much. It's best in the pocket or belt. Just my opinion, but that's how I roll.

I put a smith's dual sided sharpening tool there. Just in case LOL. I put my 24 in a sheath in my pocket.

I picked up these three to try out with my BK4. I don't have a 24, but do have Esee's in similar size range. Of these three in the first pic, I really like the 13 the best, but it is a very tiny handle.

Before long I did a very thin leather wrap on the BK13. Doesn't add much bulk to the grip, but much more traction. I may redo it some day with thicker leather or cord.

That leather wrap came out really nice! Does it still fit in the bk4 sheath?

Warriors, here's the issue you're going to find. The sheath for the 7,4,and 9 were designed with the 13's overall length of 5.25 inches. The 24 is 7" overall and will have a problem with the pocket flap catching the Velcro. That said, you can use the main pocket and it might work for the 24 in it's sheath because it's deeper. I have a 7 and 4 and a 13 that can accompany either. I also have a small custom knife, 2.75" blade, 7" OAL. Same OAL as the 24. The blade will fit in the plastic liner, but the oal is too long. It rides nicely in the pocket in it's own kydex sheath though.

I have a small prybar slipped in behind the plastic liner holding the bk13 on my bk7. One could also put saw blades there. Even with the liner removed, I don't think you'll get a folder in there. Hope this helps.

bflying, does the bk13 with the leather wrap above have any problem fitting in the piggyback sheath on the 4,7,9? It's a tight fit with no wrap.
Thanks

Yup, still works. Just doesn't sink in beyond the wrapped handle. Stands a little taller than the empty sheath (with no bk4). But the Velcro flap still fits and secures the 13 just fine. If I remember correctly, without the wrap the 13 sinks in all the way to be even with the top of empty main sheath. But just going by memory as I don't want to remove the leather just yet. That leather wrap is actually very thin leather. Doubt it would be difficult to widen the sheath plastic insert a bit to handle the slight extra bulk.

It does however make for a great combination. Although being a knife guy, I always have a fixed and folder between the two in size also. I've never really figured out that "minimalist" kind of lifestyle. [emoji56]. But if I had to grab something quick to toss in a bug out bag, it would be tough to find a better compact and cost effective combo. Would also want a good compact pocket stone like the Spyderco Double Stuff.

To Bootzon, I don't have a 7 or 9 just yet to try out. But if the specs are similar, betting the piggyback's are the same as on the BK4.

For the neck knife sheath that came with the 13, I did cut a small notch to make it fit perfect and secure, even though I'm not a neck knife kind of guy. It does make for an amazing but tiny pocket fixed blade. If I want a pocket fixed that is smaller than my Izula, and thinner than my Candiru with Micarta, the Remora is the one I grab. Perfectly fits a niche in the middle.

Thanks for the response.

Me either brother! The concept is highly over rated. "It" doesn't do any good at home does it?

FYI, I have a BK4 + BK7 and the sheaths are almost identical. As near as I can tell the BK4 sheath is just a little longer, but that's just eyeballing it. I didn't take any measurements.

Thanks for all the replies. I appreciate it. It.

I think I may get the BK13 and get the 14 or folder down the road. No need to get the D2 steel if I have the 13 in stainless. This way I can keep the 13 for skinning and food prep. I just wish there was a Becker folder but I really like the Dozier and mule (may be a little much for my needs thou).

I always thought the minimalist thing was about carrying just the right amount of gear/tools with you and trying to carrying it with the least amount of bulk. It's about realizing what you actually need and what you think you'll need (leave that stuff at home). It's also about knowing which gear and tools can perform double and what you can make in the field.

For reference I got surge, the LM extender, the blade holder (with 2 blades) and one bit card into the sheath.
