Machete and Fire

I wasn't sure if I should put this in the machete or fire thread so I will start one for both. I've been wanting to see if a Fiddleback machete is as good as Andy claims, it is and more. It's the best machete I've ever held. It cuts like a laser but is tough enough to baton through 3" dry pine like its butter.

I've also been wanting to make a fire with flint and steel. After 15 minutes of struggle I reverted to a $3 fire steel I picked up at a Coleman store. I will study up more on flint and steel, and I will start one that way.

The pine catches quickly and it doesn't take long before the oak is added.

The machete makes quick work of the forked sticks for the franks. I thought the 12" size might be too short but I was wrong. It's the perfect balance for the jobs I'll put it through.

It's not steak or chicken but they can't beat getting my girls around a fire with me.

awesome!

i think a PK, BC Jr. and a 12" machete would make for a great Fiddleback themed "Nessmuk trio"

I so want an Andy made machete and you are not helping.

;) thanks for sharing. Looks like a great time!

Nice work! I like the 12" Machete. It's thick enough to take a beating. And has the trademark comfortable handle.

 Great thread! Thanks for sharing. I luved my 12 incher so much, I got a 14 and 16 incher too!;)

Last time I tried flint and steel we had char cloth and it still took forever... I've heard drier lint is good but with flint and steel whatever you throw the spark at has to be really willing to take and glowing ember

I tried drier lint and still couldn't get it. Going to have to spend some time working on a tinderbox.

Looks like a great time with the fire and the kids, thanks for posting the pics. The new mid-tech machetes with the sheaths and shaped handles are a tremendous value and I highly recommend everyone get one. Or 3. :D
