I was out to photgraph my new machete and stuck it into this downed pine tree to shoot some pics:

After the pics I decided to chop at some of the braches to test the machete (since the dead branches are very hard compared to the rest of the tree)......
I think I found some fatwood here:

So I kept chopping and found more:

The wood is loaded with pitch and has a sweet smell.

You can here the pitch sizzling when it burns and it puffs out black smoke:

Anyway this fatwood hunting is new to me:)

Wicked looking blade there Bruce,a person realy could do some fine trail clearing with that one.Nice find on the fatwood looks good
Those beetle killed pines would likely yield thousands of cords of fatwood the way they have been dying lately

Nice find! I only seem to find a good source of it when I'm using a knife that I don't want to gunk up. I need to dedicate a cheap hatchet for it, or something.

That machete of yours is beautiful! I'm sure it's in the Machete Build-off, but what are the specs on that?

Thanks guys.

The machete is made from 1/8" 1080 steel, 17" blade and 7" handle of purple heartwood. This is the first one I've ever made...in fact its the first one I've ever used:p I have handled ones in stores but never used one. I did some brushing under the power line to my house with it and had fun taking down sapling sized aspens in one swipe.

I'm sure its available here by the truck load if a guy was tuned into finding it.

wicked machete Bruce!

nice fatwood score, like others have mentioned, there should be tons on your area.

I may have to take a trip up if i ever get a bigger truck.......

Man, that's a sweet looking machete! First one I've seen that had the tip and handle I want in one...first one I've really liked in a long time, great job!

Gotta love accidental finds of large amounts of fatwood. I just found an entire tree skeleton of fatwood. Right at thirty feet long, nearly two feet in dia. with many limbs longer than I am tall and as big around as my leg all fatwood. It's enough to last me the rest of my life and it's just across my own property line on a neighbor's land. What's really cool is that Mike said I could have it all if i wanted it, he had no use for it.
