Does anyone have any feedback on Ontario's machetes? Specifically the D-handle vs. the normal riveted handle. I like the 1 piece molded idea of the D, but just don't like it much for some reason (aesthetics? :) ) Unfortunately I can't find either to look at in person. The only thing I've found locally so far is a $2.97 Wally-world POS. :barf: Any other brand/model suggestions are welcome as long as it stays under $30-40. I think I'd love a Becker Patrol machete but can't quite swing $80 for a relatively small machete right now. My intent is to use this to augment an arsenal of trail building/maintenance toys.

I have the D handled Ontario machete. It's a great blade for the $. I spent a few hours sanding down the seams and rounding out the square edges of the D, and it is very comfortable so long as you keep a firm grip on it. If your hand slips when striking something, the D will catch your pinky between your palm and first knuckle and hurt like #*&@ But, you could always just hacksaw the D part off and sand it flush. Wouldn't take long at all.

Do a search for Ontario Machete here and on Google, and you will find a lot of detailed info on turning this rough-around-the-edges knife into something really nice.

I have a one-piece D-handle 12" Ontario machete and I love it.

It works just fine now that I have sharpened it myself with a metal bastard file and coarse stone.

Good luck,
Allen.

You might look for the Cold Steel Machetes. They are cheap and a more standard design:

You might also look for Barteaux machetes. They are made from L6 alloy and hold an edge a bit better. The blade design is kind of odd. It is cut off diagonal at the end rather than curved to a point. You might find one at an Ace Hardware:

(Enter Barteaux in the search field)

Ontario Machete's are great. I keep a 12 inch one in my truck, and another in my canoe/kayak bag for camping. They take and hold a good edge and can take alot of heavy use.

I think the Ontarios are the best in the sub-$40 price range. My straight handle served me well until I got into Himalyan Imports khukuris. Now I use an 18" or 25" Kobra for brush clearing duty.
