I was given a machete that is of the colima style, and stamped just above the handle with "El Coyote" over a coyote head. The blade is about two feet long and the plastic handle looks like bakelite. The handle has flat brass rivets and has a chip out of it. I am guessing the machete was made in the late sixties or early seventies.

From reading about colima machetes, ( Machete Specialists) I understand the sharpened backedge is for cutting grasses on the backswing. The handle shape is conventional, so the technique for that kind of swing seems awkward. Does anyone know how it is supposed to be wielded?

The handle needs to be replaced. I know machetes tend to be on the inexpensive side, but this machete is really comfortable to swing. it might be worth it to have it rehandled. Are there kits for this, or any suggestions as to whomever might do this kind of work? I have little to no access to a workshop at this time to do it myself. ( I live in hotels due to the nature of my work.)

The machete has no sheath, and I am thinking I would like a sheath that will fit on the side of a backpack. Are there universal sheaths that are available, or patterns that might be bought?

The machete will be used in southern Florida for clearing light brush and Saw Palmettos, some thumb thick vines, and tall grass. Is this the proper use for this type of machete?

Simple--hold the machete so the plane blade is parallel with the ground. Place your thumb on the flat of the handle, or on the very base of the blade. Use a back and forth swing using the mass of the blade like a pendulum. You can also use the back edge for grubbing work like chopping roots. Saves your forward edge.

Godspeed Tactical makes universal kydex scabbards that are quite nice. I'm in the process of having some leather ones done as well, but it'll be a while before those are ready.

Yup! Sounds like it'll do just fine and dandy for it. :)
