Riddle me this:

Why does my kabar cutlass machete, 11 inch blade, weighing in at 1.2 lbs

CHOP WOOD and SLICE through vegetation SO MUCH BETTER, than my

18 inch Ontario jungle machete, which weighs 1.4 lbs. I spent some time with a bastard file working that thing over too. Additionally, I just don't like swinging it, feels awkward to me. I feel dumb. The kabar cutlass on the other hand feels real good, even sexy one could say. Is it simply the concentration of mass? And perhaps the hollow grind?

My guess is technique. The KA-BAR is not really a machete, and rather a large chopping knife. My guess is that you are using big knife technique with BOTH and as a result you are getting sub-optimal results with the Ontario. In my mind there's no way in hell that an 18" Ontario should be outchopped by a KA-BAR Cutlass. Something is strange here, and technique is the most likely culprit.

I would think the Cutlass might shine at chopping (mine does) and that the machete would work better on vegetation.

I have both, and would choose the cutlass any day. I think the Ontario is too heavy for a machete, and the handle is abysmal. My "16 Fiddleback or Collins with a re-worked handle, now THOSE are good machetes.
