I've looked and looked and can't find a thread on this subject, so here goes...

I have a Harbor Freight belt sander and want to sharpen my machete, but I'm not sure whether the belt should be run against the blade edge, or towards the blade edge.

I gather that the side of the machete opposite the cutting edge is called the spine?

I know that I should use progressively finer belts, but I can't figure out how I should run the belt against the blade.

THANK YOU for your help.

Depending on which HF sander you have, I would be sure to keep it well cooled. You can muck up an edge very quickly with a high RPM belt sander. I generally set edges with rough grit with edge going into the belt, but edge away on finer grits.

Great information. Thank you.
