I have a good Tramontina machete that I need a sheath for, I am not real picky about what kind but I do want one better than the thin canvas style that usually comes with cheap machetes. Anyone know where to get one after market. Chris

This is my favorite machete and sheath. The blade is a 14 inch Tramontina. I find them to be the perfect length for what I do. For canoeing an 18 makes alot of sense as it will give you added reach.

Here's a shot of the same sheath attached to my daughter's pack. At higher elevations the machete is only used for clearing ground for sleeping, chopping out hummocks of grass, roots, prying out small rocks, and chopping/digging dirt to level a sleeping spot. Strapped to a pack like this it carries out of the way and then becomes the universally accessable camp knife.

This sheath is designed to be worn on the belt or attached to a saddle via the big leather flap. Attached via the flap it doesn't swing and flop around. To remove it from the saddle you only have to untie the leather thongs and pull it out.

How thick are the blades on the Tramontinas? SMKW's has them at a really cheap price, and I've been tempted to buy one.

My Tramontina 14" Bolo has a .085" thick blade. The 12" machete's blade is .075" thick. Both are less than a year old. I recommend either/both. Like just about any other machete on the market, you'll probably want to put your own edge on them. They came with reasonable edges, but only on the straight part of the blade. Once you hit the curve, they get progressively less sharpened to the extent that the point has no edge ground down at all. Having a shrpened point isn't usually all that important on a machete, but I like a cutting edge there anyway.

Up here in Canada I can get an 18" tramontina for about 14 dollars (with sheath). I think anywhere you go the prices are very reasonable for such a great product :)

At those prices you can't go wrong. I have the 10, 12, 14, and 16 inch blade lengths. The sell for about $6 US down here. In fact it is quite common to pay twice as much for a good looking sheath.

The edges do need some work when you get them. I just work them over with a file and finish the edge on a fine diamond stone.

I have the advantage of being able to pick through buckets or bins of them and get the ones with good looking wood. I usually file and sand down the wood to make an even match with the metal. I also file the spine of the blade. Mac

Edited to add: The 14 inch Tramontina Bolo is an awesome blade. I only have one of these but as yet don't have a sheath for it. Believe it or not I can't find them down here. SMKW has them for $6, that is a steal. I need a new one, as mine has seen years of use as my "trunk machete".
