Looking for Latin style machete sheath (not tourist stuff) in 12", 14",and 18".Any ideas?

I make my sheaths from old jeans layered and glued with waterproof carpenter's glue in for layers each side, but used to make them quick out of old fire hose.

Someone on here used a piece of pvc heated and flattened. I have yet to try it but it sounds like a great idea. I made mine (for 18" trams) out of 1/8 mahogany ply and epoxy. I haven't used a flexible sheath since I took a tumble and the blade cut right through it. Also did one out of cherry and brass but it's mainly a wallhanger now that the other (lighter!) one is done. The machete itself does see camp use though (lives on my pack - too cumbersome to hike with). I've been working on another one but I can't seem to shape the scales for a good 'feel'.
If you can build a birdhouse or make a spice rack, a wooden sheath is effective, lightweight, easy, and cheap...just like a machete!

Didn't someone post Ilbruche's leather bolo sheath recently ? (those pics are always worth re-posting)

Mariobab, have you thought about using an epoxy rather than glue ? You'd get twice the end product and epoxy works really well with natural fibers.

Deadeye,

This is the quick-draw baldric that Ilbruche made made for my Machax, It is great to wear, I want one for a machete, just deciding which machete...

That's the one, I remember that pouch as well. That style should lend itself well to a bolo I figure. I'm trying to figure out a way to make a hard sheath for one without a stupidly wide throat and that seemed like a good solution.

this is my first PVC sheath. i recommend it ever time someone asks this question. in the pictured sheath i kind of burnt it. i did that one over an open fire. not the best idea. i wrapped part of it in tough faberic to hide the burn. i also attached a leg tie and i lashed my modded pilot survival knife to it. it make a good set-up.

ive had good luck with gray pvc and my shbm. i used a torpedo heater and some welding gloves to form it around my knife. my only complaint is that it has scuffed the finish of my knife. not a huge problem for a user and im sure if i made another one i could make it better. best part is it costs next to nothing to make. adding hardware/belt loop is the only tricky part.

Barber - That PVC looks very practical:thumbup:

Deadeye - I don't think you need a big throat, Ilbruche just opened up the side, you flip the thumb strap, and quicker than you can say "venerable Canadian botanical guru", you have a Machax in your hand....

Lol, that's exactly why I remember the picture.

I can't think of anything better than that forward cutout, I just need to figure a way to retain it without the strap...maybe molding the edges inward would work.

Hmmm...sounds like I need to go drink some beer in the shop and figure this out...

how thick are those nylon machete sheaths from smkw I was wondering cause the ones I've seen are really thin and worthless.

they are worse than worthless. I grabbed mine and removed my machete and it cut right thru the sheath, and into my hand. much better to build a PVC or wooden one as on here, or get a quality leather one made

That sir is a Vietnam survival kit. A machete and that knife remind me of pics and vids of the war.

I think they're designed with the general public in mind. Not many Americans outside of this forum actually sharpen their machetes.

Hi I use the cord loop as belt attachment.
If you´d like you can put some more loops or alice clips in the cord that is rounding the shealth or even I can put more eyeletes for more attachment points ;-)

here is my DIY.

OT, but what knife is the second on the left?

I just got my first machete, a 12" Imacasa that my parents brought me from Costa Rica, and I think I'll make a PVC pipe sheath for it. Thanks for the inspirations everyone, I'll post pics of the finished product!
