I have a few questions regarding machetes I own a 14 in tramonina bolo that I love but the handle is too small if I round out the back portion so my hAnd can fit in the middle it looses the safety and will want to fly out of my hand with hard swings. What would be the best way to mod the handle? Another question is which handle material is best for a working machete poly or wood? As I said I love the tram and it does what I need it to do but if I had to use it extensively I'm sure it would become uncomfortable.

I've had a generic make of machette for roughly 20 years or so. It was never really comfortable to use and sometimes hard to hold onto the vulcanized rubber grip.

I came across it in the shed the other day and found it in deplorable shape. (shame on me). The good news; the handle had deteriorated to such a state that I could crack it off with a srewdriver. The bad news; rust had pitted the length of the entire blade and started under the grip. (BTW snake blood apparently is made from acid )

Long story short; with a wire wheel, sand paper, bed (truck) paint, red oak, aluminum arrow cut offs, I now have a comfortable (trnslt-usable) machette.

I'll try to get some pictures of the finished project.

The more straight bladed Tramontinas have slightly larger handles.
These can be easily modified or wrapped with rubber bands.
Here is an example of the model i mean :

I´d always go for wood as it can be modified.

ps : for really large hands, the CS "Latin" is probably best, but that one is at least 18 inches and a totally different grip style...
