I like Machettes too. That why I had a big smile on my face when I received my Newt Livesay RCM(Recon Combat Machette), along with a WOO neck knife. Nice toy isn't it???

Jeff,

I have a AKI machette with a convex edge. I like the machette a lot, however, I don't care for the convex edge.
They are good for clearing trails, deer lanes, turkey blinds and just handy around the house.

Larry about the convex edge, do you not like it because of the performance or for sharpening reasons? If is is sharpening have you tried a strop?

Does anyone have any experience with the 'Survival 12" Machete' from Brigade Quartermasters. The blade is shiny and has a bird (eagle?) and the word 'GAVILAN' stamped on the blade. BQ claims it is the 'all climate, all terrain, all purpose survival 12" machete without equal in cost or effectiveness.'

Cliff,

I don't like the way it cuts, as it wants to "hack" brush, weeds, etc; Also, I don't really like to sharpen it, as you pull against the edge.
I plan on having another edge ground.
You have any suggestions? Thanks!

Interesting, that is the first time I have heard a complaint about the cutting ability of a Moran type edge. Could it be that it is not done very well, or do you find that you don't like this type of profile in general?

As for sharpening, you are in for a bit of a time without power equipment to reprofile 12" of ATS-34. I would consider discussing it with Aki, maybe he could do it for you.

Thanks Jeff,

I really appreciate good research.

book marked that page.

I own a USMC chattilon machete circa WWI

recently I had it revamped with bubinga grips and I reworked the handle a bit to fit my hand. I don't want to use it anymore though.

Thanks again,

chris
