I live in Maine and spend quite a bit of time in the great outdoors. For the past two years I have been using an over the shelf but alas it's time has come to an end.(I've been using it despite a broken tip. Seeing how it is Christmas time I figured I could but a machete on my list. Any suggestions?

Newt Livesay's RCM or RTAK would be a good bet. But then a good old Ontario is pretty hard to beat.

King Tut -- Take a look at the reviews on the above index page of Cliff Stamp's work, under "Machetes". Quite comprehensive.

IMO, it's hard to beat USA-made, mil spec Ontario's for the price--around $20--which makes them practically disposable. If you can do with a 10" or under blade, there are many exotics on the market to choose from. You also might check out the new Becker Knife & Tool Bush Hog from Camillus, in the Camillus forum here.

Have fun -- Will

Wow. Thanks Alot.

A little different line - The old Air Force? survival tool sold commercially as the "Woodsmans Pal" is better in the north woods I think.

Here is a thread with a few answers...

Like I mention in that thread, I am partial to the Barteaux for cheap.

And I really like the feel of my Martindale Golock, the handle is very comfortable. That means a lot when you have been swinging it for a bit. Also, as a side note, the SAS use the Martindale Golock as their primary jungle tool. There is a great passage in retired SAS Sergeant Andy McNab's book, "Immediate Action" where he mentions that they are taught to keep their Golock with them at all times, sleeping and showering, all the time. Because, in Malaysia where they were training, with a blade you can walk into the jungle naked, and live.

No prices because, most likely you cannot buy direct in single items. Also, they are in the UK, so shipping would be a killer.

But check out....

An American source for a couple of them.

I have the Golock, the Jungle, and I am planning on getting a Paratrooper.

Tut --

Sorry to report that Ross Aki suffered a bad injury last summer and to date has not resumed making knives and machetes, at least to my knowledge. Maybe someone else has more news on his condition and hopes for renewing his knifemaking career.

Just to clarify, while the performance of both of the Barteaux machetes I have used is strong, NIB the performance is very low as they come with poor edges on them. This makes no difference to me, but may be critical to some.

Great news on Ross Aki. After posting above, I dropped him an email to see how he was doing. Received his reply this morning. He's just completed the first knife from his brand new shop, and hopes to start clearing his back log soon.

Sharpness plays a key role in what I'm looking for. The underbrush up here consists of some really thick stuff.

Willyork, I'm glad to here Ross Aki is doing better. It's a shame when someone in or outside the knife community suffers an injury that prevents them from doing what they love.

You may think it's funny but wait till it's your turn.
