I thought you knifemakers would get a kick out of this.
I'm a machine tool guy. I traveled the world buying big machines for the last 10 years.
A german company; Boehringer has a little museum in their plant with their old equipment.
This saw is just plain pretty.

ok, here's the kicker...
This is a fully working model of a very large planar mill, built entirely by apprentices (teenagers!) as a gift to their instructors.
This model is about 12 inches tall. The actual machine, probably used in a shipyard and was more than 30 feet tall.

I still can't comprehend it.

Amazing! Would love to see that planar mill actually operate. That is an amazing model.

Nifty. I can smell them. I love that clean greased machine smell.

If you get a chance in Munich, the Deutches Museum has an awesome collection of early industry.

Lavawood, I wished I'd known you were into tools like this we could have had a good chat at the show. That bandsaw is gorgeous, thanks for posting.

my favorite was when I explained Balls Out to my wife and son and pointed to the Ball Governor and explained how at "balls out" the machine was producing full load.

Notice the ball governor on the machine to the upper left (45 degrees and about 1.5 feet) of my beautiful wife's head....

That's sweet! The grin on that little girl is worth any price of admission.
Thanks for sharing.

The machine here is one I designed and installed in winston salem. the part painted Ferarri Red is a rear spindle for a CAT 797.
It's not red in the application, we were just making a point. This is a live spindle vertical lathe with both a vertical and horizontal rams.
OLD school concept in the most modern of applications.
This lathe can cut a 15mm depth on this part.
with both rams at the same time.
both are 300mm square and the vertical ram has a live spindle. the table has a 100 HP motor. I bought several like this and about 50 others of different function and similar size
The part comes from a 12 ton pour at the foundry, the whole ladle. The part machined is 4 tons when it gets to the machine. That means 8 ton of that pour was in runners to fill the cavity fast enough. Cast Steel.
The part needs a total of about 8 hours in 5 different machines

These are some really cool pics guys! I always loved hanging out with the antique machinery at the County Fairs and the Sacramento Railroad Museum. If you're ever in Ca that should be one of your must see stops if you can make it. Amazing museum. Lavawood you have an awesome job bro :-D

Lavawood, where in Winston-Salem did you take those pics?

They don't look like NC mountains... Beautiful trip.

The top 2 pictures are St. Moritz Switzerland
The lower 2 are Stresa Italy, both places I spent a lot of time in while working with machine tool builders.
