Machined or Hand-Smoothed Mags on a Chopper

In addition to deciding on a blade color with Black Canvas Mags -- thanks for all the input on another thread , I'm also thinking about machined vs. hand-smoothed handles.

Any thoughts on which might be more secure or comfortable for heavy duty chopping with a big blade such as the NMFSH or FBM?

Thanks.

That answer's gonna pretty much vary from person to person. It has a lot to do with what works better with your hands, IMO.

Machined for me. I am waiting on a response back from the shop for thin machined slabs on my NMFSHLE. Mags are too fat for my meaty hands.

For me it varies from knife to knife.
I prefer machined and sand them down to my liking if needed.

I really like the smoothed micarta on my CGNMFBM. But then it sort of doesn't matter, as I prefer to wear gloves when chopping.

THis is so true plus it varies by blade, and time of year used too.

I like mags more in summer when I dont usually have gloves. I like standards, especially on thicker stock , in winter when I more likely to wear gloves.

Say its summer and I dont have gloves and I use a lanyard I like hand shaped cause it rocks in my hands and can slide alittle without blisters associated with machined slabs and I dont have to worry about losing it due to lanyard:thumbup:

For a fusion handle I like smooth handles but I seem to prefer machined handles on everything else.

Garth,

Does smoothing remove much Micarta from the machined Mags (i.e., overall thinner) or is it inconsequential? The reason for asking is that I prefer the fat machined Mags on my Double Cut NMFSH-CG to the slightly trimmer Black Paper LE handles.

Changed my NMFSH order to Handshaped black canvas micarta with black blade, that will look amazing on this blade :)

I am more of a Handshaped guy when it comes to choppers. For smaller knives it is machined handles all the way.
