Need recommendations on machinery to flat grind planer blades. Any ideas on where to get and what to get?

Currently am using a bosch 4" hand grinder with flexible disc's.

I am located in Malaysia( whose Prime Minister just visited President Bush Jr.)

a 2x72" belt machine is the best over all knife grinder. www.trugrit.com for starters but i would look for a machine there that you can get belts for. happy grinding.

Some people are using an aluminum disk (about 1/2") thick) mounted on a bolted down motor, with abrasive paper glued on the disk for flat grinding. These can be bought or made without a lot of expense.

Mounting the motor so the disk runs horizontal keeps most of the grit out of your face/eyes.

thanks for the suggestions guys. I think that 2x72 belts are too expensive because they are imported. But the sanding disk is a good idea.

What speed and hp. do you suggest. I have 3 phase supply at 415v. What grit do you suggest, how many plates, what diameter?

Any other suggestions?

Kevtan,

Most of the disks are 9 inches in diam. and 1/2 inch thick. I only have one, its easy to peel off a sheet of abrasive and replace. It is best to have a disk small enough to cut abrasive sheets to fit, less expense. Think a 1/2 horse motor is minimum, now using a 1 horse for this at 1725 rpm. Lucky you with the 3 phase.

Everyone probably has a favorite grit. I use 60 grit for shaping and 120 grit to finish on the wheel, then finer grits by hand until you are happy. Some go to 1000 or 1200 grit by hand and never polish.

what type of glue do you use? Do you one disk and change the grits by unpeeling and fixing or do you have many disks of different grits?

By the way thanks for taking the time replying with your experience.

Rhino,

I now work and live in Kampar, about 3 hours drive from Penang. And your homepage dont work.

Thanks for answering.

i have a 9" sisc sander also. you will have to see what grits work for you. you use a non premanent stick adhesive made by 3-M company. variable speed and a reverse switch help a lot.
