A few hours ago my gf asked to borrow my knife. In this case, the knife I had on me was my super cqc-7 which I have had since Monday. A minute later she returned it, and I damn near cried. She had apparently used it to rake out a plastic bead from between the crease in the concrete sidewalk outside our place, and she used the edge side, thus requiring many attempts to retrieve said bead. When asked why, her simple and frustrating response was, and I quote " the bead was pretty, but your knife scratched it, so I threw it away". I'm back now from a long walk, and looking for some sympathy from my brothers on the forums. Guess its my fault for forgetting the golden rule of knives, when someone asks to borrow your blade, always ask, What for?

here are some pics of the aftermath

wow i would be telling her that since it was a new knife when you let her use it and she returned it in a very mucked up stat that she just got her self a knife and that she could buy you a new one out of her own money or she can give you the money to buy yourself a new knife and if she said no i would tell her to hit the road as she has no right to damage your property like that

Congratulations, your knife looks like a user. I can't see why you'd be upset, unless you're one of those "safe-queen only nancy boys." ;)

Hey, if you love her don't worry about it. It's not worth losing a good woman over. It's just an expensive hunk of steel, titanium and g-10.

I always like Emersons more after they are beat up and abused looking anyways! Now you've got a story stuck to that knife. I'm sure there will be many more but that is the first.

I remember the first time my wife used a knife of mine in front of her family. She pulled it out of my pocket (my hands were covered in pork fat, we were making sausage) Opened it, cut a childs toy free from the packaging, closed it back up and slipped it in my pocket!

man that is a user knife anyway, it is a tank, i have one that is a emerson/benchmade cqc7, you cannot hurt it.
that knife is built to take abuse. the only reason you would want to keep it mint is if you was going to resale it at some point and if you was carrying it i doubt that is the case.
use it and don't sweat the small stuff...

Get rid of the GF.

Or educate her on the use of tools.

Kind regards,

Jos

yes that is the golden rule , the second rule is make her buy you a new one and send that to me:D, is just a knife bro , it would tick me off but whats the knife for? :)

Looks like it has been used. The only problem looks to be on your end. Haven't you taught her to use the right tools? Why doesn't she have her own knife?

Just so everyone understands, I love my girl very much, and value her far more than any knife, gun, whatever. The point I was trying to make was that it was new, and a rather pricey piece. I've got a hundred beaters that are perfect for cutting up concrete, but I just wasn't prepared to have this one handed back to me in that shape. I'm over it now, wasn't looking for any relationship advice, just sharing a story. Glad everyone enjoyed it, thats my gf in the avatar, I'm quite fond :)

Dude that sucks, it's always hard to get the first scratch on a new [expensive] possession. There's not much you can do, but I would teach your GF how to respect a fine tool. Those scratches will add to the overall patina. Whenever I get something new and expensive, I'm not afraid to show my wife how to use it properly so we can avoid this kind of thing. At the end of the day, it's just an inanimate object, but these objects have a cost and they don't NEED to be abused or used incorrectly. Education my friend ... education. Hand her a framing nail and say: "use this next time OK sweety."

You can resharpen it yourself, get it refinished at a local machine shop, and educate your girlfriend about knives. Emersons aren't so expensive that it's worth crying over a few scratches. Heck, give her the knife and buy yourself a brand spanking new one.

they do say lending a knife is the fastest way to lose a friend :D

I have 2 category of knives, ones that I use and ones that other people use.

FWIW i use knives a lot and dont scuff them up like that, i dont blame ya for being pissed, i know some folks think scuffs/scratches give a knife "character", i have never been able to figure that one out lol, all it does for me is make me think the thing looks scuffed/scratched up and that sucks when its a $200 knife.

my sister did something similar, she pried a large staple out of a box with my black coated MT LCC at x-mas a few yrs back, didnt scuff it up nearly as bad as yours is though.

i wont loan my nice knife to hardly anyone, i usually have a old spyderco delica SE for loaning, doesnt matter with that one.

dont blame ya a bit about being pisses though, i would consider it a learning lesson and go on with life though, at least if ya like this girl anyway.

Have a heart! What is a knife which did not come handy or did not get used. This is how all knives should look.

Wow if my girlfriend did that to any of my expensive knives i would demand a new one from her.
But my girl knows that that i take good care of them so she would just get a old kitchen knife or a nail for this job.

Hello!
It's just an Emerson! O.o
and BTW, only knives that I let people borrow, is my Opinel and a couple of SAKs.

I gave my wife a knife to beat the hell out of, maybe you should do the same, she might get interested in knives!!!!
