Around 8 months ago I rember seeing a Mad Dog knife for sale with a blade I believe that was "tiger striped" (correct if wrong term). I am going to be getting Mad Dog knife in the near future, but cant find any mention of this extra option on his site.

Does anyone have a knife like this ? Does anyone know if the ATAK and Shrike are available with that option ? If not, how hard would you say it is to locate one for purchase.

Thanks in advance, sorry if my terms are wrong, not the best memory

Wow - another Mad Dog thread - come on guys -surely you have SOME opinion on this...

Personally I would go for the Busse Kitten stars..

I think it might have been one of his ceramic knives. They come in different colors.

I did not see the ad.

Don't know if the steel knives are available in tiger stripe.

Dark Nemesis,
I don't know if the "tiger stripe" is still an option. Have you been to Mad Dog's forum?? www.tacticalforums.com
Check it out, and post your question there. I'm not sure what "Blilious" is refering to, but I don't know anything about Busse knives, so I am guessing they have something similar to a tiger strip.
Some people love Mad Dog knives, some hate them. Everyone has their own opinion.

See ya at Mad Dog's forum.

Blades

Will is correct; only the ceramic knives are available in camo. Here is a good site with a pic of a Mirage X Hunter in camo: HERE

I would not suggest a ceramic knife for general use; steel is a lot stronger. You might find something you like in this pic:

From the top, the ATAK (7" blade), K2K (a special run knife for KNIFEGNUGEN '00; a similar knife for KN '01 is currently available, but only 12 are being made, so act quickly if you want one), Mako and Pygmy ATAK (5" blade).

Or, if you are looking more for a fighter, take a look at these:

The Shrike is at top, with the Mini Shrike, Voodoo Child and Wild Thing below.

A considerable difference sometimes exists between knives which are of the same blade length and similar profiles. Look at these:

The top knife, a Mini Shrike, is made from 3/16" stock, but only the choil area is of this thickness; the blade is about 1/8" thick for most of its' length. The knife below, a Lab Rat, is 1/8" stock; thus the two top knives are of similar thickness. The bottom knife, a Baby Mako, however, is of 1/4" stock, and resembles a sharpened screwdriver. It is a brute of a knife, much more suitable for prying open stuck car doors than the other two. Of course, it is heavier and is not a good slicer due to its' blade geometry.

Hope this helps,

Walt

Another few thoughts.

A camo coating is easy to apply with spray paint; just mask the different color areas and spray the paint on. You can remove and reapply the paint if it gets worn.

Mad Dog will custom finish knives without the hard chrome finish; the resulting polished 01 steel is corrosion prone, but some people prefer the polished steel.

A further new option on some knives is the 'glowing temper line' which is quite striking; this is not a quench line (hamon), but one produced during tempering. It shows through the hard chrome finish well, and is attractive.

Mad Dog will without extra charge, fit a custom grip to fit your hand. You send him xerox copies of your hand in a few specific positions (I forget the details, but he did say that the position with the middle finger extended was not one that he needed for me to send). Most of the MD line is available with a Thin Grip; this makes concealment easier.

Totally Judy has a TG Voodoo Child of mine; my daughter (who has big hands) didn't particularly like the TG, but Judy says that she does. Perhaps she will check in with some remarks.

Hope this helps, Walt

Not to butt in, but I believe Strider does a tiger stripe finish on ATS-34. Not sure if you were possibly thinking of one of their blades.

Yep, Walt is correct, I REALLY liked the Voodoo Child with the TG. (Walt, unfortunately for me..... I sent that knife back to your daughter quite a while a go....perhaps I should have kept it since she doesn't like it!!!).

The TG worked for me, but I can see why many people would not like the TG. It was certainly an awesome knife. I was checking it out at my desk at work, and the men started swarming around... (it's groovy being a knifeknut chick!). Of course, now they are even MORE respectful of me than they previously were! They knew that the Voodoo Child was a serious knife.

Heck, I'd get one. I'd love to have a MadDog.

I tell the truth and
they think it's hell.

TJ; that wench (my daughter) did not tell me that you had returned the knife. You DID have some pics taken of you with your garter belt on and the knife 'concealed,' right??

Have fun in the desert, Walt

Please don't take this as trolling, or an effort to say the emperor has no clothes, but I'd like to ask a couple questions that I believe would draw flame on any Mad Dog forum.

1 -- what is the explanation for what must be the world's longest ricassos?

2 -- (This is the toughy) are the handles comfortable/ergonomic? I know that Beckers are, and everyone says that Busse's are good, and they look good to me, but the MDs' handles look mostly ugly to me. WOuld have to be awfully comfortable before I'd buy one, I know - not that I have the $$.

These are serious questions, please.

Bugs,

We have debated just about everything about Mad Dog knives, but, about the only thing we all agree on is that these knives have very comfortable handles. Try it.

I second not2sharp. For the majority of people, those handles are very comfortable. There are some who have bigger or smaller hands and they need to find a MD knife of corresponding size, though the variation in handle size is very slight.

As for the ricassos... I dunno.

Bugs3x,

Essentially, the long ricassos are the by-product of the "flying buttress" plunge grind employed on Mad Dog and many other hard use knives. Stresses from lateral force such as prying and levering tend to contentrate at the plunge cut, where the blade goes from strong (full thickness), to less strong (thinner). This gradual plunge distributes the stresses more evenly, and is less likely to result in a break. A gradual plunge is necessarily longer than an abrupt one.

Kevin also likes his choils ground the way he does it, though I am may not know all of his reasons. One is to allow to wrap a finger around the choil area to choke up for better control. Another may be to acheive the edge-to-handle angle he wants while still cutting the blades out of straight stock of an appropriate width.

But the design goals are, have the blade be full width and thickness where it exits the handle, the flying buttress plunge, and a finger choil. The sum is the Mad Dog ricasso. I know it looks like a waste of edge length on the smaller knives, but in all the time I have spent using Mad Dog knives, I have never found myself wishing that back inch was sharp. I have frequently appreciated the ability to choke up on the blade with my index finger around the choil.

Mad Dog handles are extremely comfortable. They are secure, anatomical, and smooth. There isn't a better working knife handle that I know about.
