Hi,,,,new here,,,,maybe u can shed some light on this knife
MIRAGE-X EOD, TANTO BLADE CERAMIC????
I will be selling it soon and wondering if this is a sort after knife???

Yes it is a sought after knife. No more being made. You might have the best luck moving it at Mad Dog's site: www.tacticalforums.com

You can list it at the the forum toward the end of the "Front" page.

Mona.

That Dog is a keeper. Why do you even want to sell?

My brother has one and the Mirage-X isn't just any ceramic. He has the knife magazine of the Mirage's debut. The article claims that this ceramic is so tough, it can shave slivers of steel. Its true I have tried that on most of my knives and it can shave them, even my Busse.

Busse guys, please don't attack me. I know its blasphemy.

Cliff.

If you read this post, what is your take on the Mad Dog Mirage-X ceramic blade?

McClung used a composite ceramic for the Mirage-X series, this is different from normal ceramic in that it has elements added to the ceramic to give it toughness, how much toughness is added depends on the type of elements added. Think of it like a particular alloy of steel. McClung never did say exactly what grade of ceramic was using.

As for the material, all ceramics are very hard and can easily cut into steel which is butter soft in comparison. The main point that McClung promoted with his knives is that they did not have the extreme fragility of regular ceramics which can break easily if just dropped.

I have used one of McClungs ceramic knives (Operator), it has lots of problems with geometry (edge way to thick, cutting ability was very low, as was initial sharpness), the handle was also insecure and unergonomic.

I used it for awhile and was in general less than impressed. I gave it to Namviet away after being unable to get any kind of specific tolerance on its toughness from the maker. I could not get any statement from McClung about how it should fare if dropped, it subjected to an impact, if pryed with etc. .

There were lots of promotions, like "I saw a dealer throw a piece around with no damage", but when asked if I could try to duplicate any of these claims, there was no effort made to stand beind the promotion. To be frank I have no time for hype, if you want to say a knife can do something you should actually stand behind it.

If you need extreme corrosion resistance and high cutting ability I would look to David Boye and his dendritic cobalt, for high corrosion resistance and extreme toughness get Missions Beta-Ti. If you need to pass a metal detector, the the Mirage-X's are probably the way to go, though you should be able to get a maker to grind you one for much cheaper. Just buy a piece of ceramic composite and shape it, you can grind it with a regular AO belt, I have done it. No heat treating necessary.

Hey,,,,,thanks for the sales pitch??

OK,,,,,so I'm assuming all these negetive observations were with regard to your "operator" knife,,,and not directed to the Mirage-X,,,,,,

I can understand your "hype" point of view,,,,,,,and appreciate it,,,,,but for me who will be selling it,,,,I'm more interested in it from a collector's point of view and what the going value is (it will be another two weeks before my Levine Guide come in),,,,and I need the money yesterday....

speaking of yesterday,,,,almost sold a Al Mar "havana clipper" to a forum member,,,,and right after I gave him my address, etc... he asked if this was the
"switchblade" version???? Didn't know there was one???? oh well,,,,,,thanks again...

McClung has a fairly decent following and thus the aftermarket prices on his knives are usually fairly solid, you don't even see them on a regular basis. I would suggest as in the above that you visit his forum for more information.

Didn't know MD's were hard to come by,,,,,,,,I have 2 Mirage-X's,,,just can't seem to find a site or book with up to date collector values,,,,,,,I'm waiting on my Levine's book to come in,,,,hopefully his evaluation's will put me on the right path.....BUT.....
if any of you forum members know of any books or sites with honest to goodness
selling prices,,,,,let me know cause I'm really anxious to post these babies,,,and many other knives,,,,,thanks again,,,,,,,gotto go shovel out my van again,,,,,,it's like one big giant iceblock,,,,hmmmmmmmmmm maybe the MD can chip away my block :),,,,(I can hear u guys now,,,,,OH NO,,,,,she's taking a knife to the ice),,,,,,,

Question about real knives now:

Trace, your featured knife, the Damascus TTKK, looks incredible. Is this knife the same as the standard TTKK or is it slightly different dimensionally. It looks to have a little more belly and a more pronounced birds beak. Also, is that Damasteel or? is it 5/32 thickness?

The blade is a beaut.:D

Hi Cobalt.. No thats a standard profile, it might look different with the angled shots or something.. The damascus is Devon Thomas serpentine ladder, and is 1/8" thick as is the norm for TTKK's... Glad you like the blade, and thanks for the kind words..

No problem Mona...

Can you do the etching that gives a damascus look on the 3V?

Cobalt: Damascus is made by pounding 2 kinds of metal into one to be brief... Etching doesnt create the figure or pattern you see. Etching just brings out the alternating layers with controlled corrosion... Least thats the best way I know of to esplain it.;)

Trace, yes I know. I remember seeing somewhere where you could get the damascus look with out getting damascus. I know that souds kind of useless, but if you want the performance of 3V and the look of damascus, that iws a good alernative. if possible. Of course it will never look like damascus, I'm sure, but it may have a more satin cammo look.
