Anyone have any user experience with the Mad Dog Pygmy ATAK and if the 1/4" blade is difficult to work with compared to the 3/16" blade. I have seen some people complain that it just does not feel right with the 1/4" blade.

Does anyone know the weight difference between the two?

Are there any advantages with the VVTL (Very Visable temper line) compared to the combat finnish? As I have understood the VVTL means that the steel is finished to a higher degree, but will this be an advantage when in use?

Are there any pictures of the two blade thicknesses beside each other?

Thanks

Tord

I do not know the weight difference, but the feel to me was not that far off in my opinion sure the 3/16 will be lighter and a slightly better slicer. , Kevin makes the handles almost the same size on the 3/16 and 1/4 unless you ask for thin grip or over size grip. The temper lines is solely how the blade is finished the heat treat is identical so no performance difference there.

Thanks for the info! What would you choose between the 3/16 and 1/4? How will it be a better slicer?

Read on a forum from 98` this:
"After handling the 1/4" version, I can say that the 3/16" version is
DRASTICALLY different in the way it feels in the hand. There is
little comparison between the two. The thicker version feels like a
larger knife with about 3" broken off the tip".

I had the 1/4" version and I really did like the knife overall, but 3/16" would make much more sense for that size knife. I guess it really depends on what you want to use it for though. I did use mine quite a bit and even took it on a backpacking trip in the Sierras. The handle is one of the best I have ever felt.

I had the hard chrome finish

Thanks for the great info! Did you ever feel it was not balanced correctly because of the thicker blade? I mean if its the same then why not just go for a 1/4 thats much stronger...

For a knife this size, and the differential heat treat, 3/16" is plenty stout. There are guys in the military here on BF that have the 1/4" version which is probably well suited to what they will use the knife for. The balance was okay on it, though it was heavy overall. It was too thick for general cutting which is what I used it for.

Because most people have no real use for the strength that a 1/4 inch thick knife in that size provides. And like Tknife said, 3/16" with a differential temper will be more than strong enough for just about any use I can think of. The thinner knife will also weigh less and be a little easier to use IME.
