Here's the first pic of the Mad Dog ATAK that was used in the "To The Point" magazine test against a Mission MPK, and that was won in the Christmas Raffle :

Wish I could show you more, but I figure I oughta wait until the magazine is released.

Mike did a good job trying to fix the chips and the tip of the blade. I can't wait to see what it looked like AFTER the test!

Thanks to Nam, Mike and Spark, and all the forumites for participating in the raffle!

Now I am really confused. Mike initially used a first gen Mad Dog ATAK2 in the 7" tests; this was the knife discovered to have the infamous 'notches.' It was reputedly a knife that had failed heat treatment and was finished and sold by some party or parties unscrupulous.

To make sure that Mike had a genuine ATAK2 to test, I sent my second gen. ATAK2 to Jim, a DVM in OR, to x-ray for 'notches.' None were found. Jim forwarded this knife on to Mike; Mike advised me he had used it in the second round of tests, against the Mission knife, and that my knife had suffered some minor chipping, mostly through accidental contact with concrete. Mike returned this knife to me. It does have minor chipping near the point.

The knife pictured above is a first gen knife, judging from the vertical choil and matte chrome finish. It is of later production, however, as it lacks the second line of text, 'SEAL ATAK 2,' present on earlier first gen knives. It is, in fact, not an ATAK2, but a plain ATAK; no serrations are present.

Where did this knife come from? If it was used, along with my knife, in the tests vs. the Mission knife, was it x-rayed to determine whether it had 'notches' or not?

Puzzled in CA, Walt

Now I'm the one who is confused...

Oh well, I guess we'll see the big picture when the Jan issue of the knife mag comes out.

Sincerely,
Adam

Well, I confess that I hadn't perused the Christmas Raffle. So I did just that. Now, I am more confused than ever. Here is what it says on the raffle page:

A.T.A.K. - Advanced Tactical Assault Knife
The actual knife is not pictured. The knife being raffled is the one we used in our last test. It was not destroyed and is in excellent shape. We have no idea if it has a notch or not

From this text, it sounds as if the knife Nam Viet Vo donated was the only one used in the test. I do not believe this to be the case, as I stated in my first post. If it IS the only knife used, then I am really perplexed, as Jim ('Gonesailing') and I went to a fair amount of trouble and expense to prove that the knife I sent Mike for the test was a genuine Mad Dog. Why would Mike then go ahead and use a knife with unknown provenance?

I respectfully request clarification on this matter. Walt

Walt, two Mad Dog knives were tested as has been mentioned numerous times before, in several places.

1 was yours, the one you had Xrayed etc.

The other was Nam's, which he had bought in 96 and hadn't been used at all. IIRC, it was still in the plastic bag as well, however more will be posted on that when the magazine comes out.

Both MD knives were tested. Yours was returned to you, Nam donated his for the raffle.

Insert witty quip here

Spark; I apologize. I guess my 'oldtimers' disease is worse than I thought. I did find the post where NamViet Vo offered his knife, purchased from AZCK in 1996, for the test.

I did not realize that two Mad Dog knives had been used in the tests.

I do have two questions. First, were there significant differences between the two Mad Dog knives in testing? I ask this, as despite the provenance of NamViet Vo's knife, it seems to me that it still could be one of the spurious knives. It is in the right time frame, and I believe Mike said that his spurious knife was purchased from an authorized dealer as well.

Second, I recall Mike saying that the heat treatment of the Mad Dog was excellent; around mid 50's at the spine, around 60 at the edge (I forget the exact numbers). Which knife / knives were tested for heat treat?

Thanking you for your kind assistance, Walt

At the risk of being presumptuous, since the original Mad Dog test was the source of considerable controversy and heated debate here on the forums, shouldn't the retest be made public? To perhaps provide information for some of the interested parties?

Of course, it is Mike's call. Walt

You can discuss the magazine, and the reviews specifically on the forums. This issue was hashed out when Mike brought up the idea of the online magazine.

OK Here is the scoop on the article and the tests.

First the information which appears in our magazine is all copyrighted. Please do not cut and paste anything in here. You can discuss the articles all you like. Also no links to pictures please

We tested two knives. Nam's ATAK and Walt's ATAK2. All of the test results are based on the ATAK2 from Walt. We used Nam's as a comparison and back up. The results on the RC tests did come back and those will also appear in the article. The problem is that Mad Dog stated the knife we used failed heat treat. Well according to the RC tests we had performed the blades heat treat was damn near perfect. In fact it was perhaps the best example of differential heat treating I had ever seen!

So look for the article and mag hopefully later today. As many of you know my computer fried over the past week and I lost 6 of the articles and we are scrambling to get them done. I do apologize for that.

Adamantium, I am with you now. It took me more posts but I am now completely confused. Were both knives rc tested? Did MD say either Walt or Nam's knives failed heat treat or is this reference to the original test? The online mag is going to be available free??? Not a big deal for me, but I am genuinely curious after reading these posts. Will the mag clear it all up?
Thanks,
David

Snoopy,

The only MD that was RC tested was the one in my original test. The mag will make the above statements more clear. The magazine will only become FREE if we have the right amount of advertising. I don't see that happening anytime soon.
