Mad dog knives lists their steel as Starret 496 O-1 tool steel.
Is this the same steel as ordinary O-1 or just similar in composition.

O-1(any steel) from different makers differ a little in makup and purity.

MD thinks that Starret makes the best.

i hate using o-1, it's pretty much just plain carbon steel, nothing special about it, but it's very hard to grind.

Starret O1 is full spheriodized annealed, and I have been told it is the only brand that is. This makes it an excellent choice for stock removal because it is already in optimum condition for heat treating.

Personally, I don't find it hard to grind at all, but I have only worked with 1/16" and 1/8" stock.
