OK, gentlepersons . . . This is one of the subjects people have been known to get really excited about around here. Be informative and be nice!

The $hit will now hit the fan.....LOL!!! IMHO, you could never go wrong with a Busse!!!! I just bought a NIB Basic #7 from a fellow forumite for $140.00. It is the most knife I have ever bought for that price!!!

As far as the Mad Dog.....Well I don't own any and probably never will. Good luck and get ready for some interesting info!

This is getting ready to get good! Let's Get Ready To RUMBLE!!!!!

WOOOO HOOOO!!!!!! Let the hounds loose!!!!!

Only thing I'll say on this issue, don't waste you money get a BUSSE.

Why, is that the sound of a giant, 20gal can of worms opening up?

My, yes, I believe it is! Enough worms to feed the entire avian cast of "The Birds" for a year

Uuuhhh......
I suggest you use the search option here in the forums for "busse mad dog". This subject has been kicked to death, and beyond, leaving a bloody trail of tears and hurt feelings in its wake. Do the search and you'll understand what I mean, as well as getting the info you are looking for.
BTW, I loved my Basic #5, but it's gone now [sniff..sniff

Mark6 :

I know mad dog knives are extremely expensive

Only the large ones (10" blades and up), the mid sized blades are similar to the Busse ones in price.

how do they compare to Busse knives as far as quality, edge retention, strength, etc?

Regarding the blade, the steel is weaker, more fragile, rusts much faster, and not as wear resistant. This translates to functional differences in cutting ability, edge retention and overall durability.

McClung does use a tougher handle material and to be specific the grip on the TUSK I would prefer in most situations to the one on the Battle Mistress. The TUSK also has a dropped grip improving it in high impact work.

Note however that Busse Combat has modified the Battle Mistress making the grip more ergonomic and setting it at an angle to the blade. The new ones are coming out this year.

McClung's blades come with a high quality functional Kydex sheath. Busse blades used to have this as standard as well but are not switching to leather with Kydex as an option.

McClung uses a hard chrome coating on his blades. I have seen two versions of this. One that was not so good and one that was very scratch resistant. You basically had to hit the blade with a hard object to knock the coating off. He is using a different hard chrome coating that is supposed to be better than the one I liked. Busse Combat using a powder coat on the Basics which comes off rather easily and a ceramic coat on the regular INFI line which I have no experience with.

The only other relevant issue is that the warrenty on the Busse Blades covers any and all damage during knife work and it is not owner specific. The warrenty on McClung's blades is an "I'll replace it if I want to, and not if I don't.". It is also on you, the original owner, not the blade.

Now I'm going to throw a wrench in the works....how about geting a Strider? About the same price and tough as nails. Check them out at www.striderknives.com

Hey Mark6 - don't mention it...

Usually, when I give information or advice to people they wind up paying 150 $/hour for it

I own both a Busse #7 and a Mad Dog ATAK. They are both high quality. But different creatures in my opinion. The Busse is a utility knife first and a back up fighter. The MD is a fighter and a backup utility.
Busse pros: price, toughness
Mad Dog pros: Handle, Hardness, finish
It really comes done to what you like, try them both. I don't think the average guy is going push either of these knives to their limits.

My tests will show the results. If you are looking for a fighter, get the MAD DOG. If you are looking for an all round utility knife, get the Busse.

Your question specifically asked for quality, edge retention and strength.

Quality: Both are great knives. As far as the steel is concerned the Busse is the clear winner.
As far as the handle is concerned, if you are using it for defense you may be happier with the Mad Dog. For chopping or utility use, you will want the Busse.

Edge retention: This is a no brainer. The Busse wins hands down.

Both are good but my money would be on the Busse. The handle on the Mad Dog is G-10 and is stonger but there are some issues regarding chipping on the blade and handle failure if the O-1 rusts into the tang area.

Smoke, difficult question. I have never carried or used either. I have'nt had them long. I had never heard of Busse before I found this forum a few months ago. I did'nt know there were this many people like me. The Busse is a lot of knife for the money. Which I would carry would depend on the situtation. If I were camping, hunting, or hiking the Busse. If it were a hostile sitituation the Maddog. I'll say this if I had to bug out with an assault case and an ammo can both knives would go with me.
