I saw Fury Road the weekend it came out, I had a great time. Very entertaining but I had no idea what was going on. Not much backstory, Max just wandered into another adventure. Pretty much the same idea as Road Warrior and Beyond Thunderdome, as far as Max's involvement in the story. I wanted to know how the characters came to be.

Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy are about the same age, give or take, but it seems that Max was in his 20s in Mad Max, when Australia pretty much ran out of money and the police interceptors were the only law. Then, Max in his 30s after a nuclear war, and he was wandering the wastelands. Beyond Thunderdome was pretty bad, most of the natural resources were used up. It looks like Charlize Theron's character grew up after the nuclear war, in the desert.
Any ideas where the movie takes place? I realize the basic story, people are just trying to get out from under oppression, with some great effects and scifi backstory. I think it bothered me that the filmmakers didn't date it in the Mad Max timeline. Some things, like the sawed off shotgun that misfires, reminded me of the shotgun in Road Warrior. The fact that he loses a boot in the sandstorm, has two different boots. All make me think of Road Warrior.
