Just saw an ad for Taylor Cutlery. It had a Smith & Wesson knife called the H.R.T. being advertised. One look at the knife made me do a double take. It had the flippers and button stop of my MADD MAXX! Looked a bit closer and saw a credit to Darrell Ralph as the designer.
Great looking knife, as all Ralph designs are. Handle material is magnesium and blade steel is 440C. That is a good blade steel that was a premeir steel at one time. Weight is around 4oz. and blade length is 3.6".
Needless to say I was taken aback. If this is an endorsement by Darrell of S&W Knives then I will have to check this one out.

Old news. Darrel has already explained this.

He did the design some time ago under contract for another company. That company then sold the design to Taylor which then sold it to S&W. Yes, Darrel designed it. No, Darrel is not on S&W's payroll.

Chuck,
Is Taylor Cutlery jumping on Darrell's back by promoting the HRT as his design? I am sure it will increase sales of this knife. Thanks for the inside scoop on it though.

Believe I started the first thread on this -- in Custom Forum, I think. My big questions was whether S&W/Taylor could acquire instant credibility by selling one of Darrel's designs.

Darrel indicated that he'd told the companies with whom he's done subsequent collaborations about it, so it isn't a surprise to them.

I don't recall seeing the price in the ad. Will have to check it again. I have to say that my M16 CRKT has made me very fond of flippers. If this knife is finished well, in addition to having good quality components, then I think I'll be trying one. I own 2 of Darrel's collaborations now, a 3rd is on the way, and I can't ever find anybody listing the Paragee for sale, despite the OE ads that make it sound like its out there.

Of course, with Taylor being regarded as such a gypo/low life organization by so many who post here, seems possible they may shortchange the heat treat, and be selling good-looking knives that won't cut, with shoddy fit/finish too. Will just have to wait and see.

Art - the flipper HRT knife thing you are talking about was designed by Darrel and Mike Lamprey. The basic design is by Lamprey. There's a thread either on BDF or Custom about this exact knife.

Seems to be a pretty good knife, 440C blade and magnesium handle. Might even be a good user.

Yeah, and if you're ever in wilderness survival situation, you can scrape shavings off the handles to start a fire.

Seriously, anybody heard of magnesium handles before?

Mikes knife is where the front end of the Madd Maxx came from.
The Smith and Wesson is a modification of Mikes Knife. I did some mods to his design for production and a few other things that needed done on the frame ect..

Please read the other thread for a full explanation.

This knife is not shaped like the maxx and it functions on a locking liner system. Not that thats bad but the MAXX is THE MAXX..

Truer words have never been said. The MAXX is the MAX and can't be beat. Thanks for all the info. I will check out the other threads. The ad was the first one I had seen and the front end did scream MM. BTW my MADD MAXX is only getting better the more I carry it and use it. Got to mention though that the thing still looks brand spanking new! That ceramic peen finish is da' bomb!
