I would like to show a picture of a puukko that I have finished recently. I think I have got finally the shape right: or as close as. The blade is Karesuando carbon, the handle is from birch burl, used also a tiny piece of antler and some foreign brass coin.

Here is the picture:

I hope it works. Thanks for looking!

Nicely done, Poez. The shape of the handle is very clean and elegant.

I also like that birch. The translucent look of stabilized birch blocks is really cool. It almost looks like a caramel celluloid that would be used on a pen blank!

TedP - I wouldn't be surprised if that's NOT stabilised birch. I've used several pieces on handles before, and with a good few days soak in boiled linseed , it can really pop and show all the 'under layers'. A good polished lustre once the linseed goes off and it can look just like this.

Thanks guys!
Scruffuk is correct: that is not a stabilized wood. I soak finished handle in a light penetrating oil for a couple of days (it works better at bringing up the depth than linseed oil, but it does not "dry"/polymerize), then seal it with a few layers of Teak or Danish oil and shellac on the top. That works for me the best: a bit more time, but certainly much cheaper than stabilized wood and is great at bringing up the "under layers" and lets the light play in the wood grain. It probably does not make big difference for exotic woods (they do not take much oil in), but it works wonders on curly birch and on all kind of none-exotic burls (birch, maple, acacia).

P.S. It also worked well for Zebrano wood, if talking about exotic.
