I really wanted to carry the Olean Cut Co knife I restored,but didn't have a sheath. Also the only leather goods store is over hour and half away. But seeing this knife isn't very wide across the blade, I sourced leather from a new $10 tool belt from Lowes. I have pics of the individual pieces, but on my old phone(just had to get a new one busted the old one) but haven't transferred all of my pics over. It has a snug one piece welt all the way around the blade. I do plan a trip to the Tandy Leather outlet soon so I'll pick up some snaps. I have a couple more knives needing sheaths so I'm going to get some proper supplies. It fits snug enough I'm not afraid it would fall out for now. Oh cool thing about using the tool belt is it came with the basket weave pattern, extra snazzy without the extra work :D:thumbsup:

Yeah hand stitched, I used a t50 staple gun to staple the peices to a board. Then used a small drill bit in a cordless drill to drill the holes in the leather. Pulled it off the board but left the staples in until I got about 5-6 stitches done,that way it stayed lined up. One continuous thread all the way around and back to double stitch the welt. I haven't done any leather in years, not since I dabbled in forging knives in my 20s. That's another venture I wish to go back to someday. I don't have any I made,I gave them all away to friends and family.

Tandy is amazing. You will be like a kid in a candy shop...
 
That's not bad, it reminds me of some of the first sheaths I ever made but a little bit better.
I'm at least nominally better at making sheaths than I was as a teenager.

Here's a sheath I just made yesterday, you can see that I still make mistakes some times.
This time I failed to keep the pricking iron straight and plumb when making my holes and ended up with a wonky line of stitching.

You can get a basic starter set of leather craft tools fairly inexpensively off eBay like I did recently for $30, but just don't get a 60pc which turns out to have too many stamps you probably won't use.
That's what I got, and while I'm satisfied with the tools i did get and their quality for the price they definitely relied heavily on the stamps to make up the piece count.

Thanks for the advice I'll look on the bay and see if I can find a good set. My stitch lines got wonky to, especially on the belt loop. I should have known though, if your to tired to concentrate on a game of solitaire, your definitely to tired for leather work lol. You know your post reminds me I do have one knife I made somewhere. It's a little file knife as well, I'll have to dig it out and take some pics.I think I know where it is.

Guess I should look around some on here lol. I almost exclusively come to the traditional forum I forget theres a whole bunch more here. I honestly didn't know that a subforum for sheaths existed :oops: Thanks for letting me know, when I get more into leather work I'll definitely have to post there:thumbsup:

If your getting into leather work, the Sheaths and such forum is a great resource. There are some really good tutorial threads there. Most if not all of them are linked to, from a stick thread at the top of the page. Makes them easy to find.
