Made A Stupid Mistake Tonight

I work in retail, mostly doing stock work, while I am in college. Tonight I had to get rid of an empty display, but it was to big to fit into the bailer. I says, no problem, just break off the base. Based on previous experience I thought it would be stiff cardboard glued together, or maybe some plastic pins at most. Well, I am having trouble getting the halves apart, so I jam my knife in to pry them apart. My work knife is a Camillus EDC, and it has performed this very task numerous times over the last ten months.

Well, I start prying the pieces apart and then SNAP, broke the blade off at the thumbstud! I was a bit shocked, so I start thinking how the heck did some cardboard break my knife? Well it turns out the cardboard was just covering a welded steel frame, and I had jammed the knife between two welds. OPPS!:D

Luckily, I guess, I had already ordered the EDC's replacement, as it had seen enough abuse, and I had lost faith in the lock. Oh well, I learned my lesson, and have a real good explanation of why I bought a replacement.;)

Sometimes I think the real users, the kind you carry and use everyday, rather go out like that than find themselves sitting in a drawer retired. She went out in a blaze of glory serving you till the end. Give her a good burial

I hope that you now understand that a knife, especially a folder, is not a pry-bar.

HA-HA! GREAT reply, TBG!:D
I couldn't think of a better response myself!

TBG got it exactly right. You phucked up and your knife died a noble death.;)

Take pictures, post them, and we'll all say some words and give it a good burial together.

Damn, we can't even make fun of you! It was an honest mistake and a your knife was an unfortunate casualty of EDC.

Great story! I never hear stories like that.

I totally wish more people would post the deaths of their knives.

P.S. What are you going to replace it with and why?

fulloflead,

Yeah out of probably over 100 displays I have never seen one with ANY steel in it. The blade got lost somewhere, and I didn't really have time to search for it.

glockman,

I knew knives werent for prying, but I have used it to pry/cut apart cardoard before. Like I said before its usually just held together with some glue. Not that much prying stress at all.

SilverFox I probably could! They don't care too much since i do more work than almost all the other employees. I could like hang one somwhere in the stock room for all to use.

As for a replacement I am awaiting the arrival of a mini-UDT. No prying with this baby!

As much as I love my Mini-UDTs, they may not suit you for your needs at work as an EDC, purely due to size. You can get a UMS or one of the new Mini Socom Elite Autos for not that much extra. They would give you a larger cutting edge like what you have been used to with your EDC.

You're not going to like it. It's super small. You should've saved for a M-UDT or L-UDT or just something else. The Mini UDT is like a toy and I don't think you'll feel like you can do any work with it.

Trade it. Sell it. Get something you can do some work with since you seem to have a LOT of work to do with a knife. (IMHO)

not for nothing, but even though a knife ain't a prybar, I would hope that a tactical or sorta-tactical knife would withstand as much lateral force an average and normal human can apply without the use of mechanical advantage or body weight. I would expect a break as described from a SAK, a knock-off, or other thin blade, but not from an EDC. I'd even go as far as to say that the knife may be defective in material or workmanship.

Come on guys. I will try the mini, and if I find it to small, its just another excuse to buy more knives. Issn't that what we all look for?

I realise that the blade was caught between two pieces of steel but how hard were you actually prying before it snapped?

Reason I ask is because I think I'm in agreement with MelancholyMutt.

If it's a clean snap with no 'bending' in the blade it may be a case of carbon deposits causing the blade to snap prematurely.

I'm with MM and the other dude. You should have definately been able to put enough pressure on to say, damn! This cardboard is made of steel! and check it out and see why it was taking so much pressure to break. I can't imagine using enough force to break steel and still thinking it was cardboard that I am "prying". Something doesn't add up here.......It should have flexed/bent first. Perhaps you can post a pic of the handle since you "lost" the blade? Maybe Camillus would be willing to cover it, i bet they would.

EricD, should you get a 12" AK with 3/8ths plus spine thickness, or the 15"AK with 7/16ths spine thickness ( my Salyan measures 3/4 inch thickness at the spine's bend ) I can guarantee you won't hang it on the wall for any jerk named Tom, Dick or Harry to use.

Not trying to put in unsolicited hype here for khukuris, just that so many end up getting named ( and sleeping close at hand ).

Hey Eric i feel your pain, I Hate to hear about a Cherished knife Breaking , I Must agree they are not for prying I Will tell you what if you would like i will offer to " Dispose " of it for you . I Will even pay Shipping.

I'd also like to know why you lost faith in a framelock.

I lost faith in it after much abuse. For starters I lost the stop pin screw, so I was getting vertical play. I also somehow deteriorated the little black washer that puts pressure on the blade to prevent lateral play. Nothing wrong with the knife design, and I would buy another one anytime.
