Here guys, another blade that I have recently fit with a handle:
The blade (Russian tool steel) is 140mm, the knife overall 260 mm. The handle is made of bubinga with a piece of horn and a nikelsilver bolster.
Thanks for looking!
Thanks! The blade I have purchased a few years ago. That is the second handle that I make for it. Did not like the first one. Changed the shape of the blade this time too: added small ricasso and ground the spine so it would narrow down slightly to the end.
I do not think I will have to make the third handle. I am only eyeing the guard/bolster area: wonder if I should make some really small changes there....
P.S. Sorry for posting it here in General Knife Discussion: I thought I was posting in The Gallery. My bad!
I hope Moderator could help me with moving it over. Thanks!
Very nice work Poez. That Bubinga, horn grip is exceptionally nice. Can you give us more information on the steel? Is it similar to any other tool steels we might know? What's the composition? Thanks,
Thanks Joe!
The composition of Russian tool steel х12мф according to the sources I have checked is:
C: 1.45 - 1.65
Si: 0.1 - 0.4
Mn: 0.15 - 0.45
Ni: up to 0.35
S: up to 0.03
P: up to 0.03
Cr: 11 - 12.5
Mo: 0.4 - 0.6
V: 0.15 - 0.3
Cu: up to 0.3
Fe - the rest, about 84%
As I was given to understand that steel properties are similar enough to D2. I guess at that level of similarity more would depend on the heat treat rather than small difference in the steel chemistry. But I am not an expert of course so any comments are appreciated.
