any buck collectors buying any of the china made knives?
i bought one from ebay not knowing it was made in china.
to be honest though, this is a very nice little 2 blade trapper.

as i was looking at it earlier i noticed it has a number on the bolster.
anyone know what the number is for?
thanks for any info, and if you want to post some pictures of ones
you have then please do.
we all love pictures it seems,

The number should be the model number.

If you check the Buck catalog it will tell you which ones are US made (vast majority) and which ones are made overseas. I had a few of the Chinese made knives and they were well done. I far prefer US made but not all styles can be had in a US made version now.

Don't think any of of the collectors are really into them aside from being users. However, I could be wrong.

I can see them someday becoming an area of collecting in of itself. Especially, if Buck leaves China all together or it turns out that the Chinese become famous knife makers. Some early Japanese products have that going for them now.

One never knows.....

thanks for your reply ohen.
the knife is a timber rattler wood trapper #384-1 is all i can find
out about it.
it has laser etched wood snake scale pattern that looks pretty good.
i'll start carrying it next week and just see how it performs.
i can't find any info on why it has that number on the bolster?
unless it is maybe a limited edition or something?

good lookin trapper for the money,
jd

That Timber Rattler stuff sounds like aftermarket work sold through any one of a few Ebay sellers that have it done after the knife leaves Buck.

The "384 -1" is probably a 384 with a sideways capital T, which is the date code for a Buck made in 2006.

See the date code sticky at the top of the fourm page for future use. Print it off and keep it handy.....you will know when you find a old Buck.

300

wow,now those are really nice.
that stag looks as good as any i have seen.
after better examining my latest trapper i realize
it is actually basketweave 382 t,instead of
rattler 384 t.
i did not notice before because the auction was for
a timber rattler knife and i didn't pay that much attention
to the scales till i went back and looked at the picture
again.
the 382 is a little,if not alot smaller trapper.
i thought it didn't look like a knife i would normally buy.
now i know why, because i did not buy it.
they just sent me the wrong one.
it seems that it must be a limited edition as well.
i can't find a trapper,but did find a lock blade and
they are limited to 500 pieces.

You need to be sceptical and cautious about many of the "Limited Editions" listed on eBay. A large number of them are not real Buck limited editions but are (like the Timber Rattler and Basketweave models) done aftermarket. They will say 1 of 400 or 1 of 500, but I'm pretty sure that when they sell all those, they start over with number 1 again and start another "Limited Edition" of the same knife.;)

Most of the sellers of those try to make it seem that they are done by Buck, but they aren't.

Got two Buck Canoes #389 from -Bay, Stag and Amber Jigged Bone. Both came NIB, unpacked but with one Amber Jigged Bone unglued. All build quality was 3+/5, much worth them US-maded Case Canoe or my other Buck 532s. Especial I don't like to see visible standoff/clearance between scales and bolsters. I didn't expect top quality from $15 knives, but... But I'll better stay out of made-in-china knives for awhile.

hasman, you can take a little of the non fogging super-glue
and fix that scale if you don't want to send it back.
the f/f was great on my trapper, just wasn't the knife i
bid on at auction.
but i didn't realize it till today and there was a 7 day
return policy with that seller.
today is number 8,but i probably would not have returned it
anyway.
too nice a knife for $14.00 and change shipped.
but that stag canoe above is beautiful....if the one you recieved
looks anywhere as good as that one you got a keeper.

jdracing, yes I could, and I definitely would, but unfortunately the scale itself wasn't flat. Looks like the bone wasn't dried enough before it was sent to the scale production, or maybe over-dried, but is has rounded shape. Also I wasn't lucky to get the stag that seller has on the listing photos - mine came in poor color, bad shape and with many scratches, glued not straight. My bad luck... I would but one or two if I could select it by myself from few available.

hate to hear that...is it possible the seller will
take care of the problem for you?...most are pretty
good about taking care of business....send em a
picture of that stag as well....who knows, may send you
another that is hand picked.

i hope you get everything straightened out,

I'm sure the Chinese Bucks are OK but I can't bring myself to buy one.I read today China is now has the #2 economy in the world, just behind the USA.IMHO,doing business with China is like hand feeding a Grizzly Bear bacon.I know Buck has their reasons but I have mine too.:)

I like some of those China model Buck slip joints. If they only made them in the USA,I'd pony up the extra $$$ and buy some.

If Buck offered a USA made toothpick or canoe I'd be all over it. However, I don't want one bad enough to get an asian version.

p.s. I know about the A.G. Russell/Buck canoe...that's too rich for my blood.
