Made In Slovenia Hatchet ?

Another one of these stab in the dark questions. Who made it ? I bought it new at Princess Auto. Canadians will know about Princess Auto. It looks like one of those Japanese hatchets. The head is a black,deeply bearded one , on the 4 1/2" long bit, the 3 1/2" opening behind it is a handy place for your hand. A very wedge shaped head. 1 5/16" wide poll. The difficult to read circle stamp has ?EKLO on top , with RUSE on the bottom. Below it a 50 . Hot stamp. Painted on the 13" haft is: 2920565-1LB HATCHET, below that in smaller letters MADE IN SLOVENIA. It has a triangular shaped eye.

When I picked it up I thought about the Inuit ulu (sp) knife.

Sounds like probably a Helko, but I thought they were all made in Germany.

The same pattern head but heavier is listed as Bosnian . I wonder if that pattern is something of a Balkan thing. What's the common carbon steel for axes? They boast about CK45, which I would guess is 1045

Yes, it's a common Balkan style of axe most commonly used for splitting, in fact. Struc also produces that pattern. CK45 would be an equivalent to 1045, as you surmised.
