Hey yous guys, wanted to clear somthing up and get others opinions. The reason why a knife made in America cost more than a knife of similar materials and design made overseas is cause we pay our employees. You are paying for the labor. I dont buy American cause the Chinese cant make a knife but because I rather give an american a job rather than give companies more reason to take production overseas. Not saying chinese knives are garbage but I will say there not collectable. Any my point is American made goods are more expensive but for good reason, you pay for the labor involved with producing knives. Companies that charge American prices for Chinese and Thai made knives or That fired everyone and took production to China should be shuned from the knife world if not in all industries. What do you fellow knife lovers think?

I agree I prefer "made in USA". It sounds like you would pay more for an inferior product made here, just because, it's "made in the USA" .

As always, things aren't as simple as they may appear.

Thousands of American jobs depend on the import of foreign made goods. From shipping clerks to customs employees to dock workers to freight ship crews and many many more. These are AMERICANS who depend on the import of foreign made goods to support their families, pay their mortgages, put food on the table, and oh yeah- they pay income taxes that fund public schools, the military, and every other government funded thing you can think of. If the USA stopped importing foreign made goods, a whole lot of Americans would find themselves unemployed. And that wouldn't be good for the US economy.

And then there are all the businesses here in the US that depend on inexpensive made foreign goods to stay in business. If it weren't for the import of inexpensive foreign made goods many, if not most of those businesses would go out of business, and all of their American employees would find themselves unemployed and the economy would spiral downward.

And then there are trade agreements. Which basically means that a foreign country agrees to allow American made products to be sold in their country (like China) if America allows their products to be sold in America. Now these trade agreements aren't always well-balanced, but a lot of AMERICANS depend on these agreements to sell American made products to those foreign countries, which in turn enables them to stay in business and keep their American workers employed. If we as a country decided that we were no longer going to buy Chinese made products, China would stop importing American made goods. And since China has one of the largest, growing economies on Earth, such decisions would only hurt the American economy and put Americans out of work. It should also be noted that American made products are extremely popular in China right now. American made products are revered as "high quality" and actually considered "status symbols" among the Chinese.

When you live in a GLOBAL economy like we do, where our jobs and our economy are directly intertwined with the economies of foreign countries, and directly dependent on foreign trade, saying things like "You should only buy American" or "Don't buy Chinese goods, support American jobs", simply ignores the realities of the modern world we live in and what it takes to keep the American economy afloat.

Funny, I just posted this on the Spyderco subforum:

I dont know... It's awefully difficult in this day and age to "buy only American". It seems there aren't many folks who insist on this mantra, but when it comes to knives they're suddenly so patriotic. I mean, you go to Target, Costco, the car dealership, BestBuy... Everyday you are buying goods from clothes to computers to food made in Pakistan, Bangladesh, Indonesia, etc. but when it comes to knives suddenly well hell oh no Im an American, no foreign knives for me... I am an American also and buy domestic any chance I can, but life is too short to get caught up in that mess. Jobs are going overseas for various reasons, one of them is that noone wants to work factory jobs. Tell me something, anyone of you want to work at a factory making Levi's jeans for 8 bucks an hour? Well, off that job goes to Honduras.

You want to support local knifemakers, a noble cause indeed, I do also, plenty of my knives are made right here. Some however seem to be hell bent on changing the world, but are extremely selective and limited in what they perceive as "supporting America". You either do or you don't and let everyone else decide for their own while we are at it.

I have seen post after post after post about how we should only buy American, and "I only buy American" and "you guys should also". It's good to make a conscious effort to support domestic, but like I said , it is the selective way they go about it which I feel is not logical. They'll say no to a Taiwan made American branded knife, but turn around and buy a Glock pistol from Austria for example. It might be a quality or trust issue that they'd go with the Austrian brand, but not Taiwan...But it certainly isn't "to support America".

I cannot fault American companies for moving production overseas, there are multitudes of reasons why this is happening. Speaking for myself, life is too short to further complicate it with the world's baggage. I suppose if the world does change in a sense where everything we sell at our stores are made right here at home, I'll be the first acknowledge those in the "fight", and that I missed the boat in not helping make a difference 100% of the time.

To those out to make others feel bad that they buy foreign made goods, look at yourselves first in other facets of your life.

I already got into a political discussion at a bar tonight so I am over the limit of bad ideas tonight... that said...

I personally try and buy American made knives but that is not discounting the quality of other knives. Not to say I will not buy or use others at all, let alone the quality of those knives, I just want to know no maatter what we can make them even if we can't form a proper paragraph or sentence ;)

This is a bit too political and as the OP doesn't have a paid membership I won't move it to the Political Arena forum so it's closed.
