As always, things aren't as simple as they may appear.
Thousands of American jobs depend on the import of foreign made goods. From shipping clerks to customs employees to dock workers to freight ship crews and many many more. These are AMERICANS who depend on the import of foreign made goods to support their families, pay their mortgages, put food on the table, and oh yeah- they pay income taxes that fund public schools, the military, and every other government funded thing you can think of. If the USA stopped importing foreign made goods, a whole lot of Americans would find themselves unemployed. And that wouldn't be good for the US economy.
And then there are all the businesses here in the US that depend on inexpensive made foreign goods to stay in business. If it weren't for the import of inexpensive foreign made goods many, if not most of those businesses would go out of business, and all of their American employees would find themselves unemployed and the economy would spiral downward.
And then there are trade agreements. Which basically means that a foreign country agrees to allow American made products to be sold in their country (like China) if America allows their products to be sold in America. Now these trade agreements aren't always well-balanced, but a lot of AMERICANS depend on these agreements to sell American made products to those foreign countries, which in turn enables them to stay in business and keep their American workers employed. If we as a country decided that we were no longer going to buy Chinese made products, China would stop importing American made goods. And since China has one of the largest, growing economies on Earth, such decisions would only hurt the American economy and put Americans out of work. It should also be noted that American made products are extremely popular in China right now. American made products are revered as "high quality" and actually considered "status symbols" among the Chinese.
When you live in a GLOBAL economy like we do, where our jobs and our economy are directly intertwined with the economies of foreign countries, and directly dependent on foreign trade, saying things like "You should only buy American" or "Don't buy Chinese goods, support American jobs", simply ignores the realities of the modern world we live in and what it takes to keep the American economy afloat.
