Greetings all, I got bored at work last week and decided to play with my "desk knife", an Opinel no.8 drop-point. I first cleaned the blade with soap and water, dried it, then wiped down thoroughly with alcohol. I immersed the blade into vinegar and was going to let it sit for 24 hrs. Unfortunately, I forgot it for an additional day. I slightly miscalculated the depth of vinegar and allowed the liquid to contact the wood. :grumpy: So, of course the wood swelled up and it was difficult to open and close for about 3 days. Works fine now though.
The pluses:
The blade has a flat, almost black patina on it. (Hence "tactical" :D )

The cons:
There is some rust down in the pivot area, and a little staining on the locking collar. I hope someone can chime in with what I can do for this.

How long does the patina hold up? I have already scratched it while trying to rub off some surface rust that formed with the prolonged immersion. If I re-immerse it, will the scratched areas fill in and become uniform looking again?

All in all, kinda fun in a simple way. I wish I had about a dozen more of these drop point no. 8's. By far my favorite Opie.

you could even "customize" it more heavily...
Opi are really easy to modify.
The wood handle is not soft but with a good file, you could have great fun with it...
In the european forum, we have done competition about it (Opi modification)..
And even the worste two-left handed guy (me!) managed to have funny personnel opi ...

If you want to see couple of nice pics (sorry, text is in french !)
