Hi Everyone,

I'm relatively new here (in maintenance particularly) but after reading a lot of your posts and checking out some pictures around, I decided to have a go at making some custom scales for my CRKT Elishewitz Horus.

I guess I chose this knife to start out with because of a couple factors...
1. Its scales were ugly.
2. Its not terribly expensive.
3. Its a unique looking knife ... custom scales make it very unique looking.

I made the scales out of oak, I started out by carving the rough pattern with a knife and then sanding them down to the final shape. From here I'll let the pictures do most of the talking.

One of the old scales ... some sort of weird patterned plastic inserts

These are all the tools I used + a power drill (and some stuff to finish the wood). I live at school and so I don't really have much in the way of a workbench or really even tools that are proper for this kinda thing, but I made do (this is sorta my excuse for the non-perfect nature of the scales)

I shortened the pivot so that it would be flush with the liners

That's a good looking job, jec, especially working with limited tools. That oak has quite the prominent porous grain, huh?

Thanks guys, Yah, the wood does have a very prominent grain. I sealed it using tru-oil... I ended up putting 3 coats on and its well filled. Hopefully that will last and prevent any issues.

Looks good. Are the edges of the oak too sharp? A little sanding will transform those scales into organic-looking beauties.

That is a great job. Now that knife takes a new role in your life. It is part of you now, your custom scale creation. Keep it up! It always gets better.

Good choice of a scale to redo! I had one and hated the look, yet loved the knife. +1 on the good look, but I would also consider rounding the edges a bit.
One question, why the area around the pivot left off? I would like it better with the entire scale and the pivot recessed.

All that said, excellent work! (MUCH better than I've been able to do... :( )

Hmmm, perhaps - i think sanding down the sides is a good idea.

I left the pivot exposed simply because i was having a lot of trouble getting it to fit, i think that once i get some real tools (aka a dremel) i might have a go at making a new set with the pivot hidden, these were definitely just my first go at it and there are definitely some things I wish I had done differently (for example, a couple of my screw holes are about 1 millimeter off which caused some issues. But ... I picked this knife cause I figured it really couldnt get worse lol.

Also, thank you all for your kind comments
