I've made these for a few years now, I haven't broken one yet. They keep the water cool because they sweat a little. They are light and very primitive.

No finish or dye inside or out. I clean out the interior with a scraper I made out of copper wire and rocks.

Just after cleaning and cutting then tops

Those are great. Can you post a pic of the scraper you made? I have wondered how you get the insides scraped.

Sure, it's a heavy piece of grounding wire, I used a ball peen hammer to forge the scraper. The wire is stiff but can be bent to fit the gourd. I made these type tools originally to build ships in bottles.

That is pretty nifty. Never thought that one of those could be made into a canteen. You learn something new everyday. Thanks

Where can you get the seeds to plant some gourds. I like the shape of the ones you use. When is a good time to plant them as well??

I guess you don't seal them with beeswax. I grew a few one time and tried to make a canteen out of one. I didn't like the taste. I have seen some with a rawhide wrap. Looked very nice. Could have been the type of gourd I was using. I did some scraping inside then threw some gravel into it and did alot of shaking and swirling to knock out some of the pith inside. Maybe you soak them a number of times to get the taste out, I don't know. Nice work as usual. I have seen some nice pottery looking bowls that were stained and had some scrimshaw like drawing on them. Regards Loosearrow

The gourds themselves have plenty, I'm not sure about growing them, I do know they grow them everywhere.

No, I don't, I like them to sweat to keep the water cool, any sealer will prevent this. The soil flavor does go away after a while, you can soak them, maybe with baking soda, before using, I've filled them with tea. The flavor doesn't bother me.

that is a beautiful canteen. i would like to try my hand at it. here are some pics of our gourd bowls that we made last month at wintercount. this decorating technique would work great on your canteen.

Very cool creations, guys. The only time I've had much exposure to gourds was this one house that always gave them to us on Halloween when I was a kid, instead of giving us candy. Many did I hate those people... :D

Very Cool!
Do the gourds need to be dry before you can clean/scrape them out?
Thanks

Usually the gourds are dry when they are sold.

Nice wood burning, I figured I would so some burning on these projects.

I also plan on making a few bowls done with pine needles woven onto the top.

I've shown these before, more fun with gourds.

Thanks, I'm going to be doing more gourd crafting today. Though I may run out to the gun show for a little while.
