Like some of you, I like good lights. SureFire lights are really the industry standard. They are extremely tough, well-built lights with (in most products) flawless beams. The primary drawbacks for SureFire products are the use of lithium 123 batteries. These provide great power, but are expensive and harder to find than most other batteries.

While not suitable for carrying in your pocket, Mag Lite-sized products are great
for flashlight geeks who modify them into super lights. There is a review of one
use light here, including beamshots and impact testing onto concrete.

Great review... tough sucker. Rechargables keep getting better. I used to lurk candlepower forums... Lots of knowledgeable folks.

I'm committed to lithium 123's... but they used to be $15/doz. at the SureFire website. Fairly cheap, though you do have to send away.

John, what do you think of the Nuwaii 3 watt? Was too cheap to pay $100 for a SureFire, the Nuwaii was $30-35 and similar performance. So far its great...

I've got a little "1 x Regulated 3W - 1 pcs CR123A" LED. It's great- equivalent in light & throw to a 4D Mag Lite. Takes rechargeables!

I've heard good things about the Nuwaii, but don't have one. I do have three SureFires...don't try the 3.6 W rechargeables in them.

Yo John,
How do those compare (the one in the link/china flashlight) compare to the Brinkman's maxfire 123light which is a cheaper alternative to surefire??

Been thinking about getting one

Well, here's a review: http://www.flashlightreviews.com/reviews/brinkmann_maxfirelx.htm

Personally, I think I'd get my Chinese light, in preference. I went ahead and bought 2 rechargeable batteries and a Nano charger (another $17 between the two). The smaller light I have is plenty bright, smaller, and an LED with throw- in other words, unlike older, traditional LEDs, it will actually project a beam like an incandescent. Unlike incans, you'll never have to replace the bulb, though.

YMMV. I'm sure either will be good for you, and it's possible the Maxfire might be a wee bit brighter.

John

thanks bro...Might have to get one of those

My Brinkman is fine but I am looking for something a bit smaller (shorter)

Still have my Surefire 8X bought at least 10 years ago, back when the only "big" lights they had were the 8X and the 9N. Paid about $100 for it and worth every penny. Uses the rechargeable battery cells. It used to take 8 hours to recharge the batteries, but last year I sprung for their new Smartcharger and 2 new replacement cells. I think it was another $70 or so to get new cells and update the charger but worth it as it only takes an hour now. After 10 years I had to get the new cells anyway...

It puts out 110 lumens for 40 minutes which is nice. Got a lanyard and a red lens for it as well.

It is small enough to hold with a pistol, but still a good size. I like the new E2 Defender and was thinking about one of those as well in order to get a more compact light, but there are so many new models it's hard to decide. My son just bought himself a Streamlight Scorpion for police work.

The 8X I'm talking about is all aluminum. They make a rubber armored one now as well in that size.

I've been carrying this 5-LED light from Cabela's,nice little light;use's 2 123 batt's and they last about three months at regular useage.

(it's the smallest one in this pic)

I carry a Q III (Nuwaii) with rechargebles every day/ Nano charger
for me is is a perfect trade off between size and beam output
price and rechargability. (is that a word?)
fits right in my belt loop
Have to tighten the clip before you trust it though. for 28.00 it is better than a surefire in that if you lose it you dont have to spend a week explaining rebuying a 100.00 light that fits in your pocket
Dorcy makes a handy little light for your pocket for about 6.00 at Wally World
AM drooling over the Mag 951 though

I use the Nano charger with my little single-cell LED Chinese light, too...

As bright as I need for daily/interpersonal city use, fits in a pocket, $20.

The MAG 951 really excels for those who are out in the country, or need to light up an immense amount of area.

Those pics are amazing John. I have carried a 4-D cell Mag lite in the car for 20 years, and have customized it somewhat, but this is incredible. I have two 3D's on clips in the house. They are good solid lights but not super bright I would say.

I wonder if this mod is available for the 4D?

I'll have to see about getting one of these.. Can you tell me the source for the light, the rechargeable double A's and the Vanson Charger?

I have some of the old rayovac renewals, but had to get several boxes of them replaced by Rayovac as they didn't hold a charge. (They used to say could be recharged 25X now they say 100, but they do lousy in high drain devices.)

Thanks for sharing and any info.

P.S. John, I just spent a productive 20 minutes reading that thread and learned most of what I need to know re: the batts and charger. I'll try to stop sending my paychecks to yangdu for a couple of weeks, and if I can stand the withdrawal I am determined to get one of these. Totally kicks butt! But I would welcome any other info you might have. Thanks again.

A couple years ago, my brother gave me an Inova X5 Led light for Christmas.
This a great little light. Compact, way bright, and good battery life.
LA Police Supply lists 'em for under $30.
