So are mag strips pretty much the end all be all for blade storage in the kitchen? I need to buy a couple. Is there anythign I need to look out for? Any particular brands better than others?

Hi,

Just make sure you get them with good magnets. I got one with a bit weaker magnet. There were marks in the linoleum flooring.

I'm now thinking of custom making a drawer cradle for my current favorites.

The big fear with these is that it's very easy to chip the edge as the magnet pulls the edge toward it. You have to train yourself to put the knife away spine first and then take it off the strip with a twisting motion to twist the edge away first. Personally, I think there's just too much danger of a chipped edge.

The drawer cradle is one of the best storage methods out there. Obviously, just be sure the knives are dry when you put them away.

The ones that Ive seen online that I really like have the magnets inset behind a strip of wood, so that all the blade touches is wood.. I would imagine that that would greatly degrade the chance of a chipped blade, correct?

Sounds great to me...which ones were you looking at?

I need one for the new house we are building...great for keeping the 2 year old away from the booboomakers.
