I've had a forging press on order for more than half year now. At times I wonder why when I still able to do work like this with hand held hammers. I did the larger hawk and the middle one Saturday and got the top one about halfway forged on Saturday and finished the rest of the forging today. I just hope when I do get the press It doesn't take me 10 years to learn how to use it. The two small ones were forged from 7/8" hex and the larger one 1" hex. All 3 are 1080 steel.

TJ, I start my eye's first by making a slot. I drill five or six 1/4" holes and then clean it out with a carbide burr. Then I go ahead and forge the hawk and after that is done I use a tear drop shaped drift to form the eye. I'm going to be doing the KWKC Show in two weeks in Tacoma. If you come by I can explain more to you there..

Very cool Ray! I wish I could go to the show but cant get off work. Darn day time job!

Bruce, Your still doing the OKCA Show? I'm going to be doing the forging demo there on Sunday. One of the things I did while forging these hawks was keep track of the time it took me. I'll be doing a hawk real simular to these.

Ray; Make sure you do not break your new press when you get it like you did mine when you were here. :D

it want be much longer Ray its being worked on now and should be finished in a couple of week

and I wish I could come and teach you to use it there is a learning curve but you will do fine .

George talk to me what did he do :D

Bruce I thought you retired??

Ray Nice I'm going to havta try some of them some day when I get time

IG broke it first then blaimed you  :p :p hahaha bad IG bad IG
;)

IG, I told you I didn't know a thing about presses. I remember you saying, "Go ahead Ray, you can't break it. All my welds a rated at 30 tons." Yea, right...... :D I think what it was is I had new sandles on that had never been used for any type of forging..

Ron, I'm really looking forward to getting the press and I do wish there would be away to get some instructions from you. Believe me I'll go easy on it.

Mark, This is where I get most my steel and the hex bar when I buy new stuff: http://www.metalworld.com/trade/aa008386.html

Ray Yep Im going to Eugene show but we are too short handed at the pen for that time off. Id love to watch you forge sometime somewhere.

Dan, I am full time now at the pen. Knifemaking is night time and sunday afternoon.

RON: The weld was going and he put it to bed, when he was drawing out a hawk. It was the weld that holds the die mounting plate to the slider. :D

Ray, i'll bet you will still use a hammer a lot after you get the press up and running.
Nice hawks, I may need to try that hex bar for forging. Gib

It makes me sick to see those things. I have one I've been working on for three evenings and it still needs work. :footinmou
You'll still use the hammer. The press just helps with the hard stuff. :D

Bruce....ever think about teaching the inmates to forge. They could turn out first rate shanks then :D :D :p

Don, They seem to be able to make shanks without much need for real tools. When there's a need there's always a way. I'm really expecting the press to open a few more doors for me. Anymore when I'm working on one thing I get a bunch more ideas that I would like to try. The press will make alot more of them more doable plus I can try the ideas before I forget most of them.

Gib, I'm really liking the hex steel. I've been working on a knife blade for a couple hours out of the 7/8" hex. I started with 6", I've now got the distale taper and the point forged and its at least 12" at this stage. I'm giving my arm a break by sitting on my ass......

Those are beautiful (as usual). I don't think I have a magical hammer. :grumpy: :D

Michael, Believe me you have a magical hammer. Its just a matter of you teaching it tricks. I've been training mine for a number of years now. The trick is time and YOU learning something each time your at the forge. I feel so fortunate to be able to make somewhat of a living doing something I love to do...
