This knife is a surprise congratulations gift for a long time friend who this year took over as Head of School at a prestigious New England private high school. Magister is Latin for "master" or "teacher".

You can view the WIP I posted over in Shop Talk detailing nearly every step of the knife and sheath build here: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/1220897-Brute-de-Forge-Full-Tang-WIP

Magister
Blade: 6" x approx. 3/16" of hand forged, clay quenched W2 with brute de forge finish, flat ground bevels hand sanded to 1200 grit then etched and polished to highlight a prominent hamon.

Handle: 5" of Ebony and ray-cut Thuya burl with stainless and carbon fiber pins and a stainless steel lanyard tube. Hand sanded to 1000 grit then buffed for a natural polish. The Moose hide lanyard has one bead of Ebony and Thuya burl, and two small Ebony beads.

Sheath: 5/6 oz veg tanned leather with brain tanned deer skin lining, one-piece Thuya burl inlay, ebony stud, low profile belt loop. The leather static line has a hand turned bead of Ebony and Thuya burl.

Thank you for your interest. Please leave your comments and critiques.

Peter, Absolute perfection tip to tip. I notice the sheath came out "just right".

WOW!!!
(I actually said that out loud)

Wow is right. I love how it all ties together, the wood accents in the sheath and beads on both knife and sheath. Nice!

I always get excited when I see you've posted up something new, Peter.
This one has got to be one of your best, imo!

I do not comment on new knives too often because I have no special qualifications. But once in a while I have to speak up and say - I like that.

An exceptionally well designed and crafted combination! The woods on all the components blend beautifully. I might like the sheath even more than the knife, and that's saying quite a bit. Thanks for sharing.

Fantastic! I like every detail...... every detail on the knife and the sheath!

Very, very nice work!

Very nicely done. The finish on the handle is wonderful.. such a clean satin, crisp and smooth at once. The sheath has so many subtle details in the construction that I can almost feel the pain of the perfectionism needed to address them.. (ha)
Nice work.

Thanks for the VERY kind words everyone. I appreciate the support.

yeaaaaaaaaah......... I know. :o

As the name implies, this piece taught me quite a bit. Its the first real leather tooling I've done. Its my first butterfly style sheath, its the first of a new design of carved handle, and its my first full tang, brute de forge knife. While the knife and sheath bare the results of an experiential learning process, I'm proud of my execution. And, I've now done these things once, I can do them better next time.

And, and with this one's almost identical twin coming along right behind this one, we'll see if I actually learned anything the first time.:p

I'll climb on this praise train.

There are subtle details and overtly stated details. Both rewarding. Overall it draws the viewer in closer.

Props.
