Hey dunc....

Craplig,,umm I mean Maglights are a Taboo subject around here...

Maglights are Great for beating people with,,or checking the tires on your rig,,however when it comes to actual use as a flashlight,,they are somewhat of a Joke...

Maglights are to Surefires as MP3's and IPODS are to 8 Track Tapes, outdated. bulky and fairly useless...

Sorry I don't have the answer for you though..

As outdated as maglights are, they're solid.

Have to send my Inova x5mt in for warrenty, it's getting replaced... run time before reaching this state? 19hrs, the first set of batteries.

maglights on the other hand...

on my 2nd 2aa model, first one had rechargables out in when my sister borrowed it.. got it back corroded all to hell... this one is on about the 9-10th set of batteries and 3rd bulb.

the 2d mag is my car light, on the 2nd set of batteries so far, still original bulb.

maglight is like buck.... old, outdated, but reliable.

In the mid 90's, Maglite redsigned their lights, and changed the numbering system.

The redesign included smaller diameter light bodies, switch and reflector changes.

What's an MP3 and that other thing? IPOD? Never heard of them. Do they have Uriah Heep on MP3?

If you feel unloved here by virtue of asking about Maglites, amble on over to www.candlepowerforums.com. They have loads of threads and links having to do with Maglite conversions, LED conversion heads, and all sorts of other topics.

Maglites are far from dead. And they are not a taboo topic, either

Thanks for the reply guys ,i would love a sure fire but over here in England the are about 10x the price of mags and i cant see the point of having a torch (sorry flashlight ) that can see further than i can .

Hey dunc..

First off,,sorry I didn't realize you were from the UK.. I understand things are much more expensive than over here...
I'm also sorry I couldn't answer your question for you..

As far as Maglights go, Vamp is correct they are highly outdated, and when they start making a decent product again I will probably purchase them again.. I have bought my fair share of them,,well over a dozen, however they are now dust collectors...

Sorry they have just left a bad taste in my mouth...

They make great "hosts" for the many modifications that people are doing to them over at CandlePowerForums.com. They take a structurally sound light and make it a very good illumination tool. Sooo, not only can you use it as an effective whoopin' stick, it'll put out good light too. And if you do an LED modification, you won't even have to worry about a busted bulb. ;)

Thats another reason for mags over here in the UK , were not aloud by law to carry a weapon to defend ourselves ,so a big 6 d cell mag in the car with you goes some way to offer a bit of reassurance.

Despite the price variance, here are two good reasons to have a flashlight or pocket torch that can throw a strong beam of light farther than you can see:

1. To temporarily blind someone or something that intends to do you harm.
2. To let any quadrupeds (animals) or bipeds (people) in the area know you are nearby. This applies to wild animals that may be stalking you, dogs that may want to see what you taste like, some guy behind the wheel of his car if you're walking by the side of the road, or a miscreant waiting to get the drop on you.

I find a fierce beam of light to be a handy friend. Also, the body of the light itself can make a handy truncheon, should it come to that.
