This knife was supposed to be a 'proof of concept' for a handle construction technique that I've been pondering, but it turned out well enough for me to finish it out.
This takes some explaining, so bear with me...
The handle is comprised of a lightweight frame handle made of thin carbon fiber components, laminated with Rohacell - an aerospace foam core material used in a variety of applications requiring extreme light weight. The carbon fiber butt is mortised to the frame, and the 'fuchi' or piece at the front of the hande construction that meets the guard is pinned in place on the frame, with Rohacell between them, and then sleeved in carbon fiber cloth, then treated with resin and polished. This results in a strong and incredibly lightweight handle.
The 6” blade is .150” Crucible CPM-Magnacut, with a stainless steel seppa and a carbon fiber guard.
The overall length is 11-1/2”, and weighs a mere 5-7/8 ounces.
A sterling silver menuki of Mount Fuji adds a bit of color to the end result, and provides for a point of balance slightly behind the guard.
Thanks for looking.
