Magnetic Blade!

I have a 42 with an odd feature. The blade is now magnetic! I'm not sure when I did it, but it was not like that when I first got it. I went to hold it up to my monitor to compare colors with a picture, and it made my monitor dance quite a bit. I can't get it with in 6 inches of the screen! This has come in handy a few times on other knives, mainly fixed blades, but now I have to make sure not to get it near any iron fileings, or they could stick in the wrong spots, namely around the pins!

How would I de-magnitize the blade? Its not real strong, but definetly enough to pick up filings

I recall High School Physics : de-magnetizing can be done by:
1. repeatedly bang the metal (you don't want to do it

)
2. heat up the blade (I guess 200 Celcius will not harm your tamper)
3. wrap wire around your blade, connect a light bulb through it and light it up using your home electricity. The alternating current will produce alternating magnetic flux that will erase any magnetic field on the blade
4. run a magnet along the blade with opposite pole (i.e. S-N), but you have to do it by trial & error. This will counter the inherent magnetic field.

Hope it helps.

Thanks Chris, #3 should do it! Never heard of it, but it deffinetly makes sense. And I aced physics too, just forgot most of it!

Steel easily becomes magnetic.

A CRT computer monitor is very sensitive to magnetic fields. Even a slightly magnitized blade may visibly deflect the blade. The lamp cord trick, carefully executed so as not to cut the cord (might want to tape the blade) should do the trick.

Machine shops also have devices for demagnitizing tools since they fight this all the time. It's a real bear when your screwdriver becomes slightly magnetic in an environment where there's metal dust all around. If you drop in with your knife they'd probably demagnatize it for you for free (it only takes a few seconds) and, at most, might ding you a couple of bucks which you know aren't going into the till but into the clerks shot glass after work

so don't begrudge him.

Another option is that some places like radio stations, recording studios, and probably electronics shops, have demagnetizing machines that use the oscillating field thing as well. They use them to demagnetize whole spools of magnetized tape. Granted, most stations are going Digital (no tapes required) but they may still have the machine around. It'll just be a little stronger than the cord wrapped around the blade thing.

Hey Guys..

This is the reason that I don't understand why some makers put magnets in their kydex sheaths to hold the knife in place...

Makes Absolutely no sense to me....
