Magnetic Powered LED Light?

I saw a light at a show right before Y2K.

Clear case, magnet in the handle, bounced back and forth inside (end to end) through a coil to provide power for a LED array.

What is the darn thing called, and do you know of a reasonably inexpensive place to buy one?

I found it. Damn search engine, I had the name right, Nightstar, but I had to type it as one word. So, 130 results later, I finally think, "I am pretty sure about that name, maybe without a space....."

So are those good places to buy it?

Anyone have first hand experience with this light? Other quality information?

And with a little more research, I found that Patrick Ma at Triple Aught has them, and at a great price.

I will probably go with him when I am ready.

I'd reconsider, I don't have one but have heard they are not very bright, on the lower end of the LED power spectrum.

But if the no battery angle is what you want then cool. You can go with www.glow-bug.com, I've seen them as low as $56.

If it helps any, I have one of those Nightstars. The amount of light being put out is actually quite a lot dimmer than the CMG Infinity. Maybe about half as bright. But the lens focuses the light well and you have a good beam you can use.

I wonder if we can convince the maker to put in a larger capacity capacitor and lower the resistor's value a little so that we can have a brighter light?

A little piece of advice: Don’t recharge this thing too close to any floppy disks, mechanical wrist watches etc. The generated magnetic field is very strong.

David, easy to figure out. Take a floppy disk with data on it you don't need anymore and put it on the table in front of you. Shake the light a couple of inches over it. Then try to read the data on the floppy. If that's ok, a mechanical watch should be fine also. My guess is that too close means within five inches. In other words, don't throw the Nightstar in your briefcase together with floppies etc. since the magnet will move when the briefcase get's moved.
