I had this idea for magnetic retention for a few weeks since I've started making my own sheaths. I don't really love the kydex sheaths that fit over the forward part of the handle, they are bulky and they sometimes don't allow you to get a natural grip on the handle the first time you grab it.
I made this last night as a first attempt, for a carbon steel Mora 511. There is probably more money in kydex, rivets, paracord, and electricity for my heat gun then the knife costs, but I plan on using this a lot and the sheath is important.
I used 2 neodymium disc magnets on the back portion. The sheath was made by folding a long strip of kydex longways over the knife, forming that, and then sticking the magnets to the blade, heating a second piece of kydex over top. I drilled a few holes and inserted the rivets, and then formed the rest with an angle grinder and bench grinder for the finer detail.
Retention is great, and the draw is smooth since the only resistance is the friction of the kydex against the blade, and the smooth force of the magnets.
I am not a sheath maker, I just make my own sheaths. Purely functional, ascetically displeasing.
