Well I was out shopping again (my wife hates it when I do that) and picked up a nice folder in S30V . Nice design, but I just noticed this afternoon that the blade is magnetized (hold any carbon steel up to the blade and you can clearly see the jump when you try to seperate them). I know when the custom guys do thier heat treat, at least on carbon steel, they take it up to the non-magnetic stage. I was wondering if the same criteria would apply to a CPM steel. I won't say what brand as it would spark another round of favorite brand bashing, but wanted to know if I really need to do an exchange on this one. Steven

it could have gotten magnetized from other means. you can easily demagnatize steel by hitting it

Yes, this is general true of most cutlery steels as when they are heated they change crystal structure from one form to another. They will go back to being magnetic after they are cooled. What you are seeing is a permanent magnetic field which can be caused by any number of effects, it isn't the effect of how the blade was heat treated.

Try sticking it in a light socket. That should do the trick. No, really, it will. Trust me.

Oh, yeah, Marty said to be sure to insulate yourself first. :o
