It's me again, can someone tell me where to find heavy duty magnetic strips for holding small knives or small items so I don't sand the tips of my fingers anymore...help in need of many bandaids..

Lowes sells small magnets in packs of two. I bought two packs to make a new knife maker's magnet.

Always think of your fellow knife makers as partners in the search for the perfect blade, not as people trying to compete with you and your work!

I ordered mine from Sheffield Knifemaker's Supply. Phone number is 904-775-6453. I think it was around $15 but I've bought so much knifemaking supplies lately, I'm not sure!

I thought about trying an old speaker magnet, but decided to buy something intended for what I'm using it for.

The Sheffield magnet has wooden handles, so you're not holding the actual magnet.

Good luck.

Hey Roy....

If you want some Wicked Ass magnets,, head down to your local computer store and ask them for some Dead Hard Drives..

Tear them down , the magnets inside Rare Earth and are Super strong They can be used for a ton of different stuff..
I put one of them to the bottom of a block of wood for my drill press..

Try it,, works great,, Hey and they are Free!!

Safety Tip

I recently tried some cheap 50 - 100 lb magnets that come with handle attached and only cost about $8.00 each (CDN). They have been a huge benefit for tang tapering and grinding flats.

A small revelation became quickly apparent. VERY QUICKLY! The disk for my 9" sander is STEEL! Now when you attach a 1/8 inch drop point hunter - already tapered and ground - to a 100 lb magnet - and then bring it close to a steel disc spinning fast on a good 1 hp motor - woo-hoo! It gets exciting.

Now this lesson in stupidity should have become obvious on the belt sander but I'm backing the platen with 10mm glass so if there was attraction, it wasn't apparent.

No injuries but I used up a three week supply of adrenaline in about 2 seconds!
