Hey guys, I was wondering if anyone knew of a decently priced surface grinder with a magnetic platform for precision grinding billets? I really don't know what I am talking about with this, so please enlighten me.

Thanks,
Jimmy

New: The cheapest you will find is the surface grinder from Harbor Freight. It's about $1000 if I recall, and a mag chuck from them will go for $100 extra.

Used: Look for KO Lee, Boyar-Schultz, or Harig. There are others, to be sure, but these units in 6x12 are plentiful, and have a small footprint if your shop is crammed for space. Expect to pay $1000-$2500 for a solid unit with mag chuck included, however there are plenty of deals to be had.

If you are mostly interested in flattening billets, I suggest converting it to use a 2x72 belt.

Good luck.

Thanks!!! 1k is a little much for me at the moment... a car would be nice, but I will defenetly keep my eyes oppen for a second hand one. Thanks a lot

My dad talked about using our milling machine with a certain bit on it. I think the bit he was talking about does small circles, and takes away a little each time. I may try that when the time comes.

I found a Harig a few years ago on Ebay with a magnetic chuck and single axis DRO. I paid $450 for it, if I remember correctly. I later added a new 2x72 belt attachment from the Carolinas for another $400. I did also have to buy a phase converter as it was 3 phase. I have seen small units often on Ebay for varying prices. It worked fine except for me shorting a wire and burning out the motor which was $175 to rebuild.
