Hey Guys and Gals!!!

Looking to make a Magnetic Table.... Any ideas? I have a cool idea for a surface grinder and need to make about a 4"x18" table....

Thanks..

Oh Ya BTW... Started the Hydraulic Press build as well. Like Mr. Flemings but different... I will be posting a WIP shortly...

I don't see why not. Basically its a steel platen with electromagnets in it.

You might look at what Travis Wurtz has done for his surface grinding attachment. It look
like he's made the magnetic plate himself.

I agree with Dan have a look at the TW90

It look like it's just a block of steel with slots & magnets

The largest magnets I've found are too small though
1/4 by 1/4 by 3" at 3 or 4$ each

I would guess with that large of a table you are at at least 2 to $300 in magnets alone.

Looking for a used surface grinder magnet may be a much better way to go.

The imports are already in that range

i think you would be better off buying one since making it might cost even more in time and labor. do a search for magnetic chucks and see what you can find on line.

I have regularly bought Brown & Sharpe, 6X3" magnetic blocks for $20 on ebay. The 6X18" plates go for from $50 to $200. Check Craig's list and the traders, too.

A few years back, I bought an electromagnetic chuck/plate from a surplus house in Richmond. It had the driver/controller, all wiring and switch boxes, and the 18X36" plate. All for $200.
I traded it to a fellow who ran a machine shop for an elephant tusk. We both made out on that trade.

Look around for machine shop auctions, or used machine tool dealers. They might have a junk surface grinder that still has a working chuck.
